What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
106 Pounds BMI at Different Heights
At 106 lbs (48.08 kg), your BMI varies significantly depending on your height. Here's what this weight means across typical UK adult heights:
- 5ft 0in (152 cm): BMI 31.3 — Obese (Class I)
- 5ft 3in (160 cm): BMI 27.1 — Overweight
- 5ft 6in (168 cm): BMI 24.7 — Healthy weight
- 5ft 9in (175 cm): BMI 22.4 — Healthy weight
- 6ft 0in (183 cm): BMI 20.6 — Healthy weight
- 6ft 2in (188 cm): BMI 19.3 — Healthy weight
This shows why height matters so much — the same weight can be overweight at one height and perfectly healthy at another. Use the weight converter on this page to switch between pounds, kilograms, and stone and pounds.

NHS BMI Categories and What They Mean
The NHS uses standard BMI ranges to assess whether weight is healthy for your height. A BMI below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is healthy, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. However, BMI has important limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may have a high BMI despite low body fat. It also doesn't account for where fat is stored; waist measurement matters too. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds because these groups face higher health risks at lower BMI levels. Your GP can give you personalised guidance about what your BMI means for your individual health.

What is 106 pounds in kilograms exactly?
106 pounds equals 48.08 kilograms. To convert pounds to kg, divide the weight by 2.20462. This conversion is useful because whilst many UK people use stone and pounds, NHS clinical measurements use kilograms.
Is 106 pounds a healthy weight?

How do I convert 106 pounds to stone and pounds?
106 pounds equals 7 stone 8 pounds. Divide 106 by 14 to get the stone amount (7 stone), then multiply the remainder by 0.0714286 to get pounds (8 lbs). Our weight converter makes this instant.
What does BMI mean for my health?
BMI is a screening tool that helps identify whether your weight may increase health risks. A healthy BMI (18.5–24.9) is associated with lower risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. If your BMI is outside the healthy range, your GP can discuss personalised steps to support your health.
Does BMI matter if I'm muscular?
BMI has limitations for athletic or muscular individuals. Muscle is denser than fat, so very fit people may have a high BMI despite low body fat percentage. Waist circumference and overall fitness level are also important measures. Discuss your individual health picture with your GP.
