What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges at Different Heights

At 11.13 stone (155.82 lbs), your weight status depends on your height. Here are three real examples using NHS BMI categories:

  • At 5ft 8in (173cm): BMI of 23.8 — healthy weight range. This falls comfortably within the NHS healthy range of 18.5–24.9.
  • At 5ft 4in (163cm): BMI of 25.8 — overweight. This is just above the healthy range, though lifestyle changes could help.
  • At 5ft 2in (157cm): BMI of 28.5 — overweight. This is approaching the obese category threshold.

To find your personal healthy weight range for your height, use our free BMI calculator above — it will instantly show whether 11.13 stone is healthy for your specific measurements. You can also use our weight converter to check this weight in kilograms (around 70.6kg) if that's easier to reference against NHS health information.

NHS Guidance: Waist Measurement and Next Steps

BMI is a useful screening tool, but it doesn't account for muscle mass or where fat is stored. The NHS also recommends checking your waist circumference, as fat around the middle increases health risk more than fat stored elsewhere. For adults, a waist over 94cm (37 inches) for men and 80cm (31.5 inches) for women suggests increased health risk.

If you'd like to manage your weight, the NHS recommends a sustainable approach: a balanced diet with a calorie deficit of around 500 kcal per day, combined with regular physical activity. Even a 5–10% reduction in body weight can bring meaningful health benefits. Your GP can offer personalised advice based on your complete health picture, or you can track your progress using our free progress tracker.
