What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

  • 5ft 6in (168 cm): BMI 27.3 — Overweight

  • 5ft 10in (178 cm): BMI 24.3 — Healthy weight

For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds — your GP can advise if this applies to you.

Understanding BMI Categories and Limitations

According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. At 11.9 stone, whether you fall into the healthy weight category depends on your height — taller individuals are more likely to be in the healthy range, while shorter individuals may fall into the overweight category.

It's important to understand that BMI has limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat — athletes and people with more muscle mass may have a higher BMI but lower body fat percentage. BMI also doesn't account for where fat is stored, which matters for health risk. Your waist circumference is equally important: the NHS recommends measuring at your natural waist level. Use our free weight converter to check alternative measurements, and speak with your GP for personalised health advice alongside BMI.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Is 11.9 stone a healthy weight?

Whether 11.9 stone is healthy depends on your height and individual health factors. At taller heights (5ft 9in+), it typically falls into the healthy BMI range. At shorter heights (below 5ft 6in), it may fall into the overweight category. Use the BMI calculator on this page to check your personal BMI — it's a useful screening tool though not perfect for everyone.

How do I convert 11.9 stone to kilograms?

What BMI range is healthy according to the NHS?

The NHS defines a healthy BMI as 18.5 to 24.9 for most UK adults. For people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the healthy range is 18.5 to 22.9 due to higher health risks at higher BMI levels. Your GP can discuss what your personal BMI means for your health and whether any action is needed.

Why does the same weight give different BMIs at different heights?

BMI uses the formula: weight (kg) ÷ height (metres)². The same weight distributed across a taller frame results in a lower BMI, while the same weight at a shorter height produces a higher BMI. This is why BMI is a height-adjusted measure — it accounts for how weight is distributed relative to body size. Your GP can explain what your individual BMI means.
