What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

111 Kg BMI At Different Heights

At 111 kg, your BMI varies significantly depending on your height. Here are example BMI values using the standard metric to imperial weight calculation:

  • 160 cm (5ft 3in): BMI 43.4 — Severely obese (Class III)
  • 165 cm (5ft 5in): BMI 40.8 — Severely obese (Class III)
  • 170 cm (5ft 7in): BMI 38.4 — Obese (Class II)
  • 175 cm (5ft 9in): BMI 36.2 — Obese (Class II)
  • 180 cm (5ft 11in): BMI 34.2 — Obese (Class I)
  • 185 cm (6ft 1in): BMI 32.4 — Obese (Class I)

All these examples show BMI values in the obese range according to NHS guidelines. This is why knowing your height is essential when interpreting what your weight means for your health. Your GP can provide personalised advice about your individual weight and BMI.

Understanding NHS BMI Categories And Limitations

The NHS BMI categories are: healthy weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25.0–29.9), obese Class I (30.0–34.9), obese Class II (35.0–39.9), and severely obese (40.0+). At 111 kg, you fall into the obese range at all typical adult heights. However, BMI has important limitations — it does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may have high BMI with low body fat. It also does not account for where fat is stored; waist measurement matters too. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds.
