What is 117 kg in stones and what does it mean for your BMI?
117 kg is equivalent to 18 stone and 5 pounds in UK measurements. However, your BMI depends on your height — not just your weight. At 117 kg, your BMI could range from around 21 to 41 depending on how tall you are. This guide shows you what your BMI means at different heights using NHS categories, and explains why height matters when assessing whether a weight is healthy.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
117 kg BMI at different heights
To find your BMI, you need both your weight and height. At 117 kg, here's what your BMI would be at common UK heights:
- 160 cm (5ft 3in): BMI 45.6 — Severely obese (Class III)
- 165 cm (5ft 5in): BMI 42.9 — Severely obese (Class III)
- 170 cm (5ft 7in): BMI 40.5 — Severely obese (Class III)
- 175 cm (5ft 9in): BMI 38.2 — Obese (Class II)
- 180 cm (5ft 11in): BMI 36.0 — Obese (Class II)
- 185 cm (6ft 1in): BMI 34.1 — Obese (Class I)

Understanding NHS BMI categories and limitations
The NHS classifies BMI results into six categories. A BMI under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is healthy weight, 25–29.9 is overweight, 30–34.9 is obese (Class I), 35–39.9 is obese (Class II), and 40+ is severely obese (Class III). However, BMI has important limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat — athletes may have a high BMI but low body fat. BMI also doesn't account for where fat is stored (waist measurement matters too), and it may be less accurate for older adults or people with significant muscle mass. Your GP can provide personalised advice about what your BMI means for your individual health.
