What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

What BMI Does 14.1 Kg Give At Different Heights?

At 14.1 kg, your BMI varies significantly depending on your height. Here are examples across typical adult heights:

  • At 150 cm (4ft 11in): BMI = 62.8 — severely obese (NHS Class III)
  • At 160 cm (5ft 3in): BMI = 55.1 — severely obese (NHS Class III)
  • At 165 cm (5ft 5in): BMI = 51.8 — severely obese (NHS Class III)
  • At 170 cm (5ft 7in): BMI = 47.9 — severely obese (NHS Class III)
  • At 175 cm (5ft 9in): BMI = 46.0 — severely obese (NHS Class III)
  • At 180 cm (5ft 11in): BMI = 43.4 — severely obese (NHS Class III)

At this weight, BMI falls into the severely obese range across all heights. If you're concerned about your health, speaking with your GP is a positive first step — they can provide personalised guidance and support.

Understanding NHS BMI Categories & Limitations

The NHS BMI categories are: healthy weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9), obese Class I (30–34.9), obese Class II (35–39.9), and severely obese Class III (40+). For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, lower thresholds apply — consult your GP for personalised advice.

BMI is a useful screening tool but has real limitations: it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, doesn't account for where fat is stored, and may be less accurate for older adults or during pregnancy. Waist measurement and overall health context matter too. Our free weight converter helps you track your weight in kg, stone, and pounds — whichever unit feels most natural to you.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is 14.1 kg in pounds?

14.1 kilograms equals approximately 31.1 pounds. To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.20462. In UK measurements, 14.1 kg is roughly 2 stone and 3 pounds. Use our weight converter above to switch between metric and imperial units instantly.

Is 14.1 kg a healthy weight?

At 14.1 kg, health depends entirely on height. At this weight, BMI falls into the severely obese range across all typical adult heights. Your GP can provide personalised assessment and discuss what support might be helpful for your individual situation.

How do I convert stone to kg accurately?

To convert stone and pounds to kilograms, multiply stone by 6.35029 and add (pounds × 0.453592). The standard metric to imperial weight conversion uses 1 kg = 2.20462 pounds. Our free weight converter does this instantly — just enter your weight above.

What BMI should I aim for?

The NHS recommends a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for most adults. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults, the healthy range is 18.5–22.9. Your GP can discuss a realistic, healthy weight range for your individual circumstances and health goals.

Can BMI change without weight changing?

BMI only changes if weight or height changes. However, BMI doesn't reflect body composition — gaining muscle while losing fat can keep BMI the same while improving health. This is why BMI is a screening tool, not a complete health picture. Your GP can discuss overall health context beyond BMI.
