What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

BMI at 14.4 Stone for Different Heights

To convert kilograms to stone and understand what your weight means for health, BMI is the key measurement. Here's what 14.4 stone (201.6 lbs) gives you at typical UK heights:

  • 5ft 2in (157cm): BMI 36.8 — Obese Class II
  • 5ft 5in (165cm): BMI 33.5 — Obese Class I
  • 5ft 8in (173cm): BMI 30.6 — Obese Class I
  • 5ft 10in (178cm): BMI 28.9 — Overweight
  • 6ft 0in (183cm): BMI 27.2 — Overweight
  • 6ft 2in (188cm): BMI 25.9 — Overweight (near healthy upper limit)

BMI is calculated by dividing weight in kilograms by height in metres squared. 14.4 stone equals approximately 91.6 kg, which forms the basis of these calculations across different heights.

NHS Weight Categories & What They Mean

According to NHS guidelines, healthy BMI ranges are:

  • 18.5–24.9 = Healthy weight
  • 25.0–29.9 = Overweight
  • 30.0–34.9 = Obese Class I
  • 35.0–39.9 = Obese Class II
  • 40.0+ = Severely obese (Class III)

Important: BMI doesn't account for muscle mass or fat distribution. Your GP can provide personalised health advice based on your individual circumstances. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, lower BMI thresholds apply due to increased health risk at lower weights. Use our weight converter to check conversions between stone and kilograms instantly.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is 14.4 stone in kilograms?

14.4 stone equals 91.6 kg. To convert stone to kilograms, multiply by 6.35029. This kilogram to stone conversion is the standard used by NHS health professionals across the UK for clinical measurements and health assessments.

Is 14.4 stone a healthy weight?

That depends on your height. At 5ft 8in it's overweight (BMI 30.6), but at 6ft 2in it's near the healthy upper limit (BMI 25.9). Calculate your personal BMI using our free calculator above to see where you fall on the NHS scale for your specific height.

What does "obese" mean on the BMI scale?

The NHS classifies BMI 30.0–34.9 as Obese Class I and 35.0–39.9 as Obese Class II. These are clinical categories used to assess health risk, not judgmental labels. They indicate increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions — but many factors affect health beyond BMI alone.

What's the healthy weight range for my height?

Healthy BMI is 18.5–24.9 for most adults. For 5ft 8in, that's roughly 50–75 kg (7st 12lbs to 11st 11lbs). For 6ft 0in, it's roughly 55–82 kg (8st 9lbs to 12st 13lbs). Your GP can advise on a healthy weight target based on your individual health profile.
