What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
14.6 Stone BMI at Different Heights
At 14.6 stone (204 lbs), your BMI varies significantly depending on your height. Here's what you can expect at common UK heights:
- 5ft 4in (163cm): BMI 35.0 — Obese (Class I)
- 5ft 6in (168cm): BMI 33.0 — Obese (Class I)
- 5ft 8in (173cm): BMI 31.0 — Obese (Class I)
- 5ft 10in (178cm): BMI 29.3 — Overweight
- 6ft 0in (183cm): BMI 27.6 — Overweight
- 6ft 2in (188cm): BMI 26.2 — Overweight
These categories follow NHS guidelines where a healthy BMI is 18.5–24.9. Remember that BMI is a screening tool and doesn't account for muscle mass or fat distribution — your GP can provide personalised health advice based on your specific situation.

NHS BMI Categories & What They Mean
According to NHS guidelines, BMI ranges are classified as: underweight (below 18.5), healthy weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25.0–29.9), and obese (30.0 and above). At 14.6 stone, most adults would fall into the overweight or obese category depending on height. However, BMI has limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes or very muscular individuals may have a high BMI despite being healthy. Waist circumference is also important: men should aim for under 102cm, women under 88cm. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults, the NHS recommends lower thresholds due to higher health risk at the same BMI.
