What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

  • At 5ft 10in (178cm): BMI approximately 29.8 — falls in the overweight category
  • At 6ft 0in (183cm): BMI approximately 27.4 — falls in the overweight category
  • At 6ft 2in (188cm): BMI approximately 25.5 — falls in the healthy weight range

These BMI values are approximate and based on UK NHS guidelines. Individual health also depends on factors like muscle mass, where fat is stored, and existing health conditions.

Understanding BMI Categories and Health Context

The NHS categorises adult BMI into five ranges: healthy weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25.0–29.9), obese Class I (30.0–34.9), obese Class II (35.0–39.9), and severely obese (40.0+). At 15.6 stone, your BMI category depends on your height — which is why BMI is calculated individually, not assumed. If you're from a South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean background, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds due to higher health risks at the same weight. Your GP can provide personalised health advice based on your individual circumstances, not BMI alone.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How do I convert 15.6 stone to kilograms?

15.6 stone equals 98.8 kg. Use the standard stone to kg conversion formula: multiply stone by 6.35029. Try our free weight converter above to convert between stone, pounds, and kilograms instantly.

Is 15.6 stone (218 lbs) overweight or obese?

It depends on your height. At 5ft 8in, 15.6 stone gives a BMI of approximately 32, which is obese (Class I). At 6ft 2in, the same weight gives a BMI of about 25.5, which is healthy weight. Use our free BMI calculator to find your exact category.

What is the healthy weight range for my height if I weigh 15.6 stone?

Healthy weight depends on your height. At 5ft 8in, healthy weight is approximately 8st 4lbs to 11st 3lbs (52–71 kg). At 6ft 0in, it's about 9st 4lbs to 12st 7lbs (59–79 kg). Your GP can advise on a healthy weight range for you personally.

Can BMI alone tell me if my weight is healthy?

No. BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations — it doesn't account for muscle mass, where fat is stored, or existing health conditions. The NHS recommends also measuring waist circumference (over 94cm in men or 80cm in women indicates increased health risk). Your GP can give you personalised health advice.

Why does the same weight give different BMI values at different heights?

BMI accounts for how weight is distributed relative to height. The same weight on a taller person is spread over a larger body surface, resulting in a lower BMI. This is why BMI is always calculated individually based on both weight and height together.
