What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

45kg BMI at Different Heights

45 kilograms produces different BMI values depending on your height. Here are typical BMI results at common UK heights:

  • At 5ft 0in (152cm): BMI of 19.5 — healthy weight range
  • At 5ft 2in (157cm): BMI of 18.3 — healthy weight range
  • At 5ft 4in (163cm): BMI of 16.9 — underweight
  • At 5ft 6in (168cm): BMI of 15.9 — underweight
  • At 5ft 8in (173cm): BMI of 15.0 — underweight
  • At 5ft 10in (178cm): BMI of 14.2 — underweight

According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9. At 45kg, only shorter individuals (around 5ft 0–5ft 2in) fall into the healthy range. Taller individuals would be in the underweight category. Use the weight converter on this page to convert kilos to stone, and the BMI calculator to check your personal BMI instantly.

Understanding BMI Categories and Limitations

The NHS recognises five main BMI categories: underweight (below 18.5), healthy weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25.0–29.9), obese (30.0–34.9), and severely obese (40.0+). However, BMI has important limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may have high BMI despite low body fat. BMI also does not account for where fat is stored — waist circumference is equally important. Your GP can provide personalised health advice beyond BMI alone. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds due to higher health risks at the same weight.
