What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

47 Kg BMI At Different Heights

At a weight of 47 kg, your BMI varies significantly based on your height. Here are example BMI values at common UK heights:

  • 150 cm (4ft 11in): BMI 20.9 — healthy weight (NHS category)
  • 155 cm (5ft 1in): BMI 19.6 — healthy weight
  • 160 cm (5ft 3in): BMI 18.4 — healthy weight (borderline underweight)
  • 165 cm (5ft 5in): BMI 17.2 — underweight (below NHS healthy range)
  • 170 cm (5ft 7in): BMI 16.3 — underweight
  • 175 cm (5ft 9in): BMI 15.3 — underweight

As you can see, 47 kg represents a healthy weight for shorter adults but falls into the underweight category for taller individuals. This demonstrates why height is crucial when assessing weight health. Try our weight converter to see 47kg expressed in different units, or use our free BMI calculator to check your personal BMI.

Understanding Your BMI Category

The NHS provides standard BMI categories that apply to most UK adults. According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9. If your BMI is below 18.5, you are classified as underweight, which may warrant discussion with your GP about nutrition and overall health. Importantly, BMI has limitations — it does not account for muscle mass or where fat is stored on your body. Athletes, for example, may have a higher BMI due to muscle. Your GP can provide personalised guidance on what your weight means for your individual health, especially if you have specific health conditions or concerns.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How do I convert 47 kg to stone and pounds?

Divide 47 by 6.35029 to get stone, then multiply the decimal portion by 14 to get pounds. 47 kg = 7 stone 5.6 pounds. Our free weight converter makes this calculation instant — simply enter your weight and select the units you want.

Is 47 kg a healthy weight?

It depends on your height. At 150–155 cm, 47 kg is within the NHS healthy weight range. For taller individuals (165+ cm), it falls into the underweight category. Use our BMI calculator above to find your personal BMI and NHS category.

What is the healthy weight range for my height?

The NHS healthy BMI range is 18.5–24.9. To find your healthy weight range, multiply your height (in metres squared) by 18.5 and 24.9. For example, at 160 cm, the healthy range is approximately 47–63 kg. Your GP can discuss what's healthy for you specifically.

What does underweight mean?

Underweight (BMI below 18.5) can indicate insufficient nutritional intake or underlying health issues. If you're underweight, speak with your GP about nutrition, energy levels, and overall health to ensure you're eating enough calories and nutrients.

Why does height matter more than weight alone?

Weight alone doesn't tell you about health — a person's weight relative to their height (BMI) is what matters. The same weight looks and performs very differently on a 5ft person versus a 6ft person. That's why BMI combines both measurements to give a more meaningful health indicator.
