What Is 49 Kg In Lbs And What BMI Does It Give?

49 kilograms is equivalent to 108.03 pounds (lbs). However, your BMI depends entirely on your height, not just your weight. At the same weight of 49kg, a taller person will have a lower BMI than a shorter person. Below we show what BMI this weight gives at six common heights, and which NHS category each falls into. What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

49 Kg BMI At Different Heights

At 49kg, your BMI ranges from approximately 17.4 to 25.5 depending on your height. Here's what this weight means across common UK heights using the metric to imperial weight conversion:

  • 150cm (4ft 11in): BMI 21.8 — Healthy weight (NHS)
  • 155cm (5ft 1in): BMI 20.4 — Healthy weight (NHS)
  • 160cm (5ft 3in): BMI 19.1 — Healthy weight (NHS)
  • 165cm (5ft 5in): BMI 18.0 — Healthy weight (NHS)
  • 170cm (5ft 7in): BMI 16.9 — Underweight (NHS)
  • 175cm (5ft 9in): BMI 15.9 — Underweight (NHS)

Understanding NHS BMI Categories

At 49kg, most adults will fall into either the healthy weight or underweight category according to NHS guidelines. A healthy BMI range is 18.5 to 24.9, so this weight is appropriate for people 150–165cm tall. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds — healthy weight starts at 18.5 but extends only to 22.9.

BMI has limitations: it doesn't account for muscle mass or where fat is stored. Your GP can provide personalised guidance on whether this weight is healthy for you, particularly if you have existing health conditions.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How do I convert 49kg to stone and pounds?

49kg equals 7 stone 9.6lbs (or 7st 9.6lbs). To convert kilograms to stone, divide by 6.35029. Our weight converter on this page lets you convert between kg, stone, and lbs instantly in both directions.

Is 49kg a healthy weight?

It depends on your height. At 49kg, you'll be in the healthy weight range if you're between approximately 150–165cm tall. Use the BMI calculator above to check your specific BMI. For personalised advice, ask your GP.

What's the difference between BMI categories at 49kg?

At 49kg, shorter adults (150–155cm) will have a BMI around 20–22 (healthy), while taller adults (170cm+) will be underweight (BMI under 18.5). BMI is calculated using your weight and height together, not weight alone.

Can I use stone to kg conversion instead of lbs?

Yes. 49kg equals 7 stone 9.6lbs, or you can express it as 7.71 stone. The stone to kg conversion uses the factor 6.35029. Our weight converter supports all three units — kg, stone, and lbs.

What should I do if my BMI seems unusual at this weight?

If your BMI seems out of range for your height, double-check your measurements. BMI limitations mean it doesn't account for muscle mass or body composition. For personalised health guidance, contact your GP.
