What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Range at 5 Foot 10

According to NHS guidelines, the healthy BMI range is 18.5 to 24.9 for most adults. For someone 5ft 10in (178cm) tall, this means a healthy weight range is approximately 55kg to 74kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 8lbs).

You can verify your personal BMI instantly using our free BMI calculator above, which takes your exact height and weight into account. The BMI categories for your height are:

  • Underweight: below 55kg
  • Healthy weight: 55–74kg (8st 10lbs–11st 8lbs)
  • Overweight: 74–89kg (11st 8lbs–14st)
  • Obese (Class I): 89–104kg (14st–16st 6lbs)
  • Obese (Class II): 104–119kg (16st 6lbs–18st 10lbs)
  • Severely obese: 119kg and above

These ranges assume average frame size and muscle mass. Your GP can discuss what weight is healthiest for you personally.

Converting Your Weight to Different Units

UK health guidance uses kilograms for clinical measurements, but many people prefer stone and pounds for everyday reference. If you're 5ft 10in and weigh 85kg, for example, that's approximately 13 stone 5 pounds. Our free weight converter above lets you switch instantly between kg, stone, and pounds—useful when comparing your weight to NHS guidance or tracking your progress.

For waist measurement (another important health indicator), the NHS recommends healthy ranges of under 94cm (37 inches) for men and under 80cm (31.5 inches) for women at this height. Even if your weight is in a healthy BMI range, a larger waist circumference can indicate increased health risk, so it's worth measuring.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's the average weight for someone 5ft 10in tall?

The UK average weight for adult men is approximately 85.7kg (13st 7lbs). However, "average" is not the same as "healthy" — many UK adults are overweight. Your healthy weight range is 55–74kg according to NHS BMI guidelines. Use our free BMI calculator to find where you fall personally.

At 5 foot 10, what BMI should I aim for?

Aim for a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 according to NHS standards. At 5ft 10in, this equals approximately 55–74kg (8st 10lbs–11st 8lbs). A BMI in this range is associated with lower health risks. Your GP can advise on a target that's right for your individual health profile.

How do I know if I'm overweight at 5ft 10?

You're overweight if your BMI is 25–29.9 according to NHS guidelines. At 5ft 10in, this is approximately 74–89kg (11st 8lbs–14st). Use our free BMI calculator above to check your exact BMI instantly. If concerned, discuss with your GP about whether weight management would benefit your health.

Can I lose weight effectively at this height?

Yes. Weight loss is possible at any height through sustained calorie deficit, typically achieved through dietary changes and increased physical activity. The NHS recommends losing 0.5–1kg per week for sustainable results. If you're interested in weight management options including prescription medication, speak to your GP about specialist services in your area.

What's the difference between healthy weight and BMI?

BMI is a screening tool based on height and weight, but it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or where fat is stored. A healthy weight is individual—it depends on your age, fitness level, genetics, and health conditions. Your GP can provide personalised guidance alongside BMI. Remember that BMI limitations exist, particularly for very muscular individuals.
