What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Range at 5 Foot 6

According to NHS guidance, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. For someone who is 5 foot 6 (167.6 cm), this translates to a healthy weight range of approximately 52 to 70 kg (8 stone 2 lbs to 11 stone).

  • Underweight (BMI below 18.5): Below 52 kg
  • Healthy weight (BMI 18.5–24.9): 52 to 70 kg
  • Overweight (BMI 25–29.9): 70 to 84 kg (11 stone to 13 stone 3 lbs)
  • Obese (BMI 30+): Above 84 kg

If you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends slightly lower thresholds due to higher health risks at lower BMI levels. For these groups, a healthy BMI starts at 18.5 and extends to 22.9, with overweight beginning at 23.0. Your GP can provide personalised guidance based on your individual health profile.

UK Health Tools and Resources for Your Height

Working towards a healthy weight involves more than just a number on the scales. The NHS recommends a sustainable approach combining balanced nutrition with regular physical activity. You can track your progress using our free progress tracker, and use our weight converter to understand your weight across different measurements — stone, pounds, and kilograms — which can help you feel more confident with health discussions with your GP.

Waist circumference also matters for health: the NHS suggests men keep waist measurement below 94 cm (37 inches) and women below 80 cm (31.5 inches) to reduce health risks. If you have concerns about your weight or health, your GP can offer tailored advice and support, including referral to NHS weight management services if appropriate.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is 5 foot 6 in centimetres?

5 foot 6 inches equals 167.6 centimetres. To convert: 5 feet = 152.4 cm, plus 6 inches = 15.24 cm, totalling 167.6 cm. This is a useful reference point when using metric health measurements and talking to healthcare professionals.

What should someone who is 5 foot 6 weigh according to NHS guidance?

A healthy weight at 5 foot 6 is approximately 52 to 70 kg (8 stone 2 lbs to 11 stone) according to NHS BMI guidelines. However, healthy weight varies by muscle mass, age, and genetics. Use our free BMI calculator to find your personal healthy range based on your height and current weight.

How do I know if I'm overweight at 5 foot 6?

At 5 foot 6, a BMI of 25 or above falls into the overweight category — equivalent to approximately 70 kg (11 stone) or more. You can calculate your exact BMI using our weight converter and BMI calculator above. Your GP can also assess whether your weight poses any health risks for you personally.

Is 5 foot 6 a tall or short height in the UK?

5 foot 6 is close to the UK average height. Average UK adult height is approximately 5 foot 9 for men and 5 foot 3 for women, so 5 foot 6 falls roughly in the middle. Height varies widely and does not determine health — your individual health depends more on fitness, activity level, and weight relative to your height.

What does BMI mean, and why is it important at 5 foot 6?

BMI (Body Mass Index) is a screening tool that compares your weight to your height. At 5 foot 6, BMI helps identify whether you're in a healthy weight range according to NHS standards. However, BMI has limitations — it doesn't account for muscle mass or fat distribution. For complete health assessment, discuss your results with your GP alongside other health markers.
