What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges for 56kg at Different Heights

56 kilos may be healthy or overweight depending on your height. To convert kilograms to stone for health context, you need to consider BMI — and BMI depends on both weight and height together.

Three examples at different heights:

  • At 5ft 2in (157cm): 56kg gives a BMI of 22.8 — a healthy weight range
  • At 5ft 6in (168cm): 56kg gives a BMI of 18.1 — also healthy
  • At 5ft 0in (152cm): 56kg gives a BMI of 24.2 — healthy, near the upper limit

According to NHS guidance, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9. Use our weight converter above to switch between metric and imperial measurements, and our BMI calculator to find your personal healthy weight range instantly.

NHS Healthy Weight Guidance and Waist Measurement

The NHS recommends a healthy BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for most UK adults. However, BMI is just one part of the picture — waist circumference also matters for health. Increased health risk begins at waist measurements over 80cm (31.5 inches) for women and 94cm (37 inches) for men. Even at a healthy BMI, a larger waist can indicate visceral fat (fat around organs), which carries metabolic risks. If you're unsure whether 56kg is right for you, chat with your GP — they can assess your individual health context, including blood pressure, blood sugar, and family history, not just a number on the scale.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is 56kg overweight?

Not necessarily — it depends on height. At taller heights (5ft 7in+), 56kg is typically healthy. At shorter heights (under 5ft 2in), it may approach or exceed the healthy range. Use our BMI calculator above with your height to check instantly.

What does 56 kilos equal in stones and pounds?

56kg equals 8 stone and 11.2 pounds (8st 11lbs). To convert kilograms to stone generally, divide the kg figure by 6.35. Our weight converter on this page converts between kg, stone, and lbs instantly.

What's a healthy weight range for my height?

A healthy weight range depends on your height. For example, at 5ft 6in, healthy weight is roughly 50–68kg (7st 12lbs to 10st 10lbs). At 5ft 2in, it's approximately 46–61kg (7st 3lbs to 9st 8lbs). Enter your height into our BMI calculator for your personalised range.

Should I be concerned about my weight at 56kg?

Not automatically — health depends on multiple factors beyond weight alone, including waist measurement, fitness level, blood pressure, and blood sugar. If you have concerns, your GP can provide personalised advice. They may also refer you to NHS weight management services if appropriate.

How accurate is BMI for assessing health at 56kg?

BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may have high BMI but low body fat. Waist measurement provides additional context. Your GP can give you a complete health assessment beyond BMI alone. ```
