56kg in Stone and Pounds — BMI at Different Heights
56kg converts to approximately 3 stone and 13 pounds in UK measurements. However, whether this weight is healthy depends entirely on your height. BMI (body mass index) is the standard tool the NHS uses to assess whether a weight falls into a healthy range. The same weight gives a very different BMI depending on how tall you are. Use our free BMI calculator above to check your personal BMI instantly, or read on to see what 56kg means at various heights across the UK.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
56kg to Stone Conversion and BMI Examples
56kg = 3 stone 13 pounds (or 3st 13lbs) — this is the exact UK conversion. To convert kilograms to stone, divide the weight in kg by 6.35029. At 56kg, here's what your BMI would be at different heights:
- At 160cm (5ft 3in): BMI 21.9 — healthy weight (NHS category)
- At 165cm (5ft 5in): BMI 20.6 — healthy weight
- At 170cm (5ft 7in): BMI 19.4 — healthy weight
- At 175cm (5ft 9in): BMI 18.3 — healthy weight
- At 180cm (5ft 11in): BMI 17.3 — underweight (below 18.5)
As you can see, at 56kg the same weight in stone and pounds gives a healthy BMI for most adults between 160–175cm tall, but falls into the underweight category for taller individuals. Our weight converter helps you switch between metric and imperial measurements instantly.

NHS BMI Categories and What They Mean
The NHS recognises these standard BMI categories for UK adults:
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5–24.9: Healthy weight
- 25.0–29.9: Overweight
- 30.0 and above: Obese
If you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds — a healthy BMI range starts at 18.5 but upper limit is 22.9 rather than 24.9. BMI is a useful screening tool, but it has limitations: it doesn't account for muscle mass versus fat, or where fat is stored on your body. Your GP can provide personalised health advice based on your individual circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is 56kg in stone and pounds?
56kg converts to 3 stone and 13 pounds (3st 13lbs). To convert kilograms to stone, divide the weight by 6.35029. You can also use our free weight converter above to switch between kg, stone, and pounds instantly.
Is 56kg a healthy weight?
It depends on your height. At 56kg, you'd have a healthy BMI (18.5–24.9) if you're between roughly 160–175cm tall. Taller individuals may fall into the underweight category. Use our BMI calculator to check your personal BMI and NHS category.
What BMI does 56kg give at 5ft 6in?
At 168cm (5ft 6in), 56kg gives a BMI of approximately 19.8, which falls firmly in the NHS healthy weight range (18.5–24.9). This is a healthy weight for someone of this height.
Is BMI the only measure of healthy weight?
No. While BMI is a useful screening tool recommended by the NHS, it has limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, and doesn't account for where fat is stored. Waist circumference and overall health markers are also important. Your GP can assess your individual health.
How do I convert 56kg to stone without a calculator?
Divide 56 by 6.35029, which gives approximately 8.82 stone. To express this as stone and pounds: 8 stone = 112 pounds, plus the remaining 0.82 stone × 14 = 11.5 pounds, so approximately 3st 13lbs total. Our weight converter does this automatically.
