What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
BMI at Different Heights for 57.2 Kg
57.2 kg produces different BMI values depending on your height. Here's what your BMI would be at six common heights, using the NHS BMI formula (weight in kg ÷ height in metres squared):
- 160 cm (5ft 3in): BMI 22.3 — Healthy weight (NHS category)
- 165 cm (5ft 5in): BMI 21.0 — Healthy weight
- 170 cm (5ft 7in): BMI 19.8 — Healthy weight
- 173 cm (5ft 8in): BMI 19.1 — Healthy weight
- 175 cm (5ft 9in): BMI 18.7 — Healthy weight
- 180 cm (5ft 11in): BMI 17.6 — Underweight
At most typical UK adult heights, 57.2 kg sits comfortably within the healthy weight range. If you're taller than 180 cm, this weight may fall into the underweight category. Try our free weight converter to switch between kg, stone, and pounds instantly.

NHS BMI Categories & What They Mean
The NHS uses these BMI ranges for adults:
- Below 18.5: Underweight
- 18.5–24.9: Healthy weight
- 25.0–29.9: Overweight
- 30.0 and above: Obese
For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean backgrounds, the NHS recommends lower thresholds (healthy weight: 18.5–22.9; overweight: 23.0–27.4). BMI has limitations — it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, and it doesn't account for where weight is carried. Your GP can discuss what BMI means for your individual health, especially if you have existing health conditions or concerns.
