What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges By Height At 61 Kg

At 61 kg (9st 8lbs), whether you're at a healthy weight depends entirely on your height. Here are three realistic examples:

  • At 160 cm (5ft 3in): BMI = 23.8 — this falls in the healthy weight range (18.5–24.9) according to NHS guidelines
  • At 170 cm (5ft 7in): BMI = 21.1 — comfortably in the healthy weight range
  • At 180 cm (5ft 11in): BMI = 18.8 — also healthy weight

If you're shorter than 160 cm, a weight of 61 kg may place you in the overweight category. If you're taller than 180 cm, you'd likely be in the healthy range. Try our BMI calculator on this page to find your exact BMI instantly by entering your height and weight.

NHS Guidance: What Counts As A Healthy Weight

According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 for most UK adults. However, BMI is just one tool — it doesn't account for muscle mass or where fat is stored. The NHS also recommends checking your waist circumference: over 94 cm (37 inches) for men or 80 cm (31.5 inches) for women indicates increased health risk, regardless of BMI.

If you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds (18.5–22.9 as healthy), as these groups face higher health risks at the same weight. Speak to your GP if you're unsure whether your weight is healthy for you — they can provide personalised guidance based on your overall health.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is 61 kg in stones and pounds?

61 kg converts to exactly 9 stone 8 pounds (9st 8lbs). To convert kilograms to stone, divide by 6.35. To convert metric to imperial weight measurements easily, use our free weight converter above.

Is 61 kg a healthy weight?

It depends on your height. At 61 kg, someone who is 170 cm (5ft 7in) tall would be at a healthy weight (BMI 21.1). Someone much shorter might be overweight, and someone taller might be underweight. Use the BMI calculator on this page to check your personal BMI.

What's the healthy weight range for my height?

Healthy BMI is 18.5–24.9 for most adults. To calculate your healthy weight range: multiply 18.5 by your height in metres squared (that's your lower bound); multiply 24.9 by the same figure (that's your upper bound). Your GP can also help you determine a healthy target weight.

How do I know if my weight is healthy beyond BMI?

The NHS recommends also checking your waist circumference. For men, over 94 cm indicates increased health risk; for women, over 80 cm. BMI doesn't account for muscle mass, so athletes may have a high BMI but low body fat. A GP can assess your overall health picture.

Should I try to lose weight at 61 kg?

Only if your BMI falls outside the healthy range for your height, or if you have weight-related health conditions. Never aim for gradual weight management — the NHS recommends 0.5–1 kg per week. Your GP can advise whether weight loss would benefit your health and suggest safe approaches.
