What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
63.4 Kg to Pounds and BMI at Different Heights
To convert 63.4kg to pounds, multiply by 2.20462 — giving you 139.7 lbs. However, weight alone doesn't tell you whether this is healthy for you. BMI combines weight with height, so the same weight can be healthy, overweight, or obese depending on how tall you are.
Here's what 63.4kg gives you at common UK heights:
- 5ft 0in (152cm): BMI 27.5 — Overweight (NHS category)
- 5ft 3in (160cm): BMI 25.2 — Overweight
- 5ft 6in (168cm): BMI 23.2 — Healthy weight
- 5ft 9in (175cm): BMI 21.4 — Healthy weight
- 5ft 11in (180cm): BMI 19.6 — Healthy weight
- 6ft 1in (185cm): BMI 18.2 — Underweight (below healthy range)

NHS BMI Categories and What They Mean
The NHS defines five BMI categories for adults. A BMI of 18.5–24.9 is healthy weight, 25.0–29.9 is overweight, and 30.0 or above is obese. BMI is a useful screening tool, but it has important limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may have a high BMI despite low body fat. It also doesn't account for where fat is stored; waist circumference matters too.
For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds because these groups face higher health risks at the same BMI. Your GP can discuss what a healthy weight means for your individual health and circumstances.

Are there different BMI categories for different ethnicities?
Yes. The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage. For these groups, a healthy BMI starts at 18.5 and goes up to 22.9, rather than 24.9. Discuss this with your GP if it applies to you.
