What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
68.1kg BMI at Different Heights
At 68.1kg, your BMI varies significantly with height. Here are examples across common UK heights:
- 163cm (5ft 4in): BMI = 25.6 (overweight)
- 168cm (5ft 6in): BMI = 24.2 (healthy weight)
- 173cm (5ft 8in): BMI = 22.8 (healthy weight)
- 178cm (5ft 10in): BMI = 21.5 (healthy weight)
- 183cm (6ft 0in): BMI = 20.3 (healthy weight)
- 188cm (6ft 2in): BMI = 19.2 (healthy weight)
You can see that someone 163cm tall at 68.1kg would fall into the overweight category, whilst someone 178cm tall at the same weight would be in the healthy range. This is why height is the crucial factor when calculating BMI. Our weight converter shows that 68.1kg converts to stone and pounds, but interpreting this weight requires knowing your height.

NHS BMI Categories and Limitations
The NHS defines healthy weight as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Overweight is 25–29.9, and obese is 30 and above. However, BMI has important limitations: it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may have a high BMI despite low body fat. BMI also doesn't account for where fat is stored—waist measurement matters too. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds because these groups face higher health risks at the same BMI. Your GP can provide personalised advice about what your weight and BMI mean for your individual health.
