What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

68.4 Kg BMI at Different Heights

At 68.4 kg (150.8 pounds), your BMI varies significantly by height. Here are examples at typical UK adult heights:

  • 5ft 2in (157 cm): BMI 27.7 — Overweight (NHS category)
  • 5ft 4in (163 cm): BMI 25.5 — Overweight
  • 5ft 6in (168 cm): BMI 23.6 — Healthy weight
  • 5ft 8in (173 cm): BMI 22.0 — Healthy weight
  • 5ft 10in (178 cm): BMI 20.6 — Healthy weight
  • 6ft 0in (183 cm): BMI 19.4 — Healthy weight

These examples show how height dramatically affects BMI classification. Shorter adults at 68.4 kg may be in the overweight range, while taller adults fall comfortably into the healthy weight range. The NHS recommends a healthy BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for most adults. Your GP can help you understand what your personal BMI means for your health.

Understanding BMI Categories and Limitations

The NHS BMI categories are: under 18.5 (underweight), 18.5–24.9 (healthy weight), 25.0–29.9 (overweight), 30.0+ (obese). However, BMI has important limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may have higher BMI despite low body fat. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults, the NHS recommends lower thresholds: healthy weight is 18.5–22.9, overweight starts at 23.0. Waist circumference matters too: over 80 cm (31.5in) for women or 94 cm (37in) for men indicates increased health risk. Use our free weight converter and progress tracker to monitor your weight journey alongside your BMI.
