What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

What BMI Does 68.4kg Give at Different Heights?

At 68.4kg, your BMI varies significantly depending on how tall you are. Here are BMI values at common UK heights:

  • 160cm (5ft 3in): BMI 26.7 — Overweight (NHS category)
  • 165cm (5ft 5in): BMI 25.2 — Overweight (just above healthy range)
  • 170cm (5ft 7in): BMI 23.6 — Healthy weight
  • 175cm (5ft 9in): BMI 22.4 — Healthy weight
  • 180cm (5ft 11in): BMI 21.1 — Healthy weight
  • 185cm (6ft 1in): BMI 19.9 — Healthy weight

These examples show why height matters so much when converting kilograms to stone and interpreting weight health. The same weight of 68.4kg represents very different health contexts depending on your stature. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends slightly lower BMI thresholds — your GP can advise if this applies to you.

Understanding NHS BMI Categories

The NHS uses five main BMI categories to assess weight health. A healthy BMI for most adults is 18.5 to 24.9. At 68.4kg, whether you fall into the healthy or overweight category depends on your height, as shown above. If your BMI calculation puts you in the overweight range, losing even 5–10% of your body weight can have meaningful health benefits including improved blood pressure, better blood sugar control, and reduced joint strain. You can track your progress using our free progress tracker to monitor changes over time. Your GP can provide personalised guidance about whether your weight is healthy for your individual circumstances, medical history, and fitness level.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How do I convert 68.4kg to stone and pounds?

Divide 68.4kg by 6.35029 to get stone (10.77 stone), then multiply the decimal by 14 to get pounds. This equals approximately 10 stone 11 pounds. Use our free weight converter above to switch between kg, stone, and pounds instantly.

Is 68.4kg overweight?

It depends on your height. At 68.4kg, someone who is 165cm tall would have a BMI of 25.2 (overweight), but someone 175cm tall would have a BMI of 22.4 (healthy weight). Calculate your personal BMI using the calculator on this page.

What is the healthy weight range for my height?

Healthy BMI is 18.5 to 24.9 according to NHS guidelines. For your height, multiply your height in metres squared by both 18.5 and 24.9 to find your healthy weight range. Your GP can also advise on what's healthy for you specifically.

Why does height matter so much for BMI?

BMI is calculated as weight divided by height squared. The same weight distributed across different heights creates very different BMI values. A taller person carrying 68.4kg will have a lower BMI than a shorter person at the same weight because the weight is spread over a larger frame.

What should I do if my BMI is in the overweight range?

The NHS recommends aiming for gradual weight loss of 0.5 to 1kg per week through reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Your GP can discuss options including weight management programmes, behaviour change support, or—if appropriate—prescription weight loss treatment through specialist services.
