What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

69.4 kg BMI at Different Heights

BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. At 69.4 kg, your BMI will vary significantly depending on how tall you are. Here's what 69.4 kg gives you at common UK heights:

  • 5ft 0in (152cm): BMI 30.1 — Obese (Class I)
  • 5ft 3in (160cm): BMI 27.6 — Overweight
  • 5ft 6in (168cm): BMI 25.1 — Overweight
  • 5ft 9in (175cm): BMI 22.6 — Healthy weight
  • 5ft 11in (180cm): BMI 20.9 — Healthy weight
  • 6ft 1in (185cm): BMI 19.4 — Healthy weight

These categories follow NHS guidelines. At taller heights, 69.4 kg falls into the healthy range; at shorter heights, it may indicate overweight status. Use our weight converter to check this weight in different units, then our BMI calculator to find your personal result.

NHS BMI Categories and What They Mean

The NHS defines healthy weight as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Being overweight (BMI 25–29.9) or obese (BMI 30 and above) increases your risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other health conditions. However, BMI has limitations — it doesn't account for muscle mass or where fat is stored. Your GP can give you personalised advice about whether your weight is healthy for you. If you're concerned, measure your waist circumference too: men should aim for under 94cm (37 inches), women under 80cm (31.5 inches). Track your progress with our free progress tracker if you're working towards a healthier weight.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How do I convert 69.4 kg to stone exactly?

To convert 69.4 kg to stone, divide by 6.35029. This gives you 10.93 stone, which is 10 stone and 13.2 pounds. Use our weight converter above to switch instantly between kilograms, stone, and pounds.

Is 69.4 kg a healthy weight?

It depends on your height. At 5ft 9in, 69.4 kg is a healthy weight (BMI 22.6). At 5ft 3in, it's overweight (BMI 27.6). At 5ft 0in, it's obese (BMI 30.1). Use the BMI calculator on this page to find your personal result.

What's my healthy weight range if I'm 5ft 8in tall?

At 5ft 8in (173cm), a healthy BMI range is 55.4 kg to 74.5 kg (8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs). At 69.4 kg, you're within the healthy weight range for this height.

Why does BMI change with height at the same weight?

What should I do if my BMI is above the healthy range?

Speak to your GP about your weight and health. The NHS recommends losing no more than 0.5–1 kg per week through a balanced diet and regular activity. Your GP can discuss options including support programmes, dietary changes, or if appropriate, treatment options. Track your progress using our free tool.
