What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

71.2 kg BMI at Different Heights

Your BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. At 71.2 kg, here's what your BMI would be at common UK heights:

  • 160 cm (5ft 3in): BMI of 27.8 — overweight (NHS category)
  • 165 cm (5ft 5in): BMI of 26.2 — overweight
  • 170 cm (5ft 7in): BMI of 24.6 — healthy weight
  • 175 cm (5ft 9in): BMI of 23.3 — healthy weight
  • 180 cm (5ft 11in): BMI of 21.9 — healthy weight
  • 185 cm (6ft 1in): BMI of 20.8 — healthy weight

NHS BMI Categories and What They Mean

According to NHS guidelines, BMI categories are:

  • Below 18.5: Underweight
  • 18.5–24.9: Healthy weight
  • 25.0–29.9: Overweight
  • 30.0–34.9: Obese (Class I)
  • 35.0–39.9: Obese (Class II)
  • 40.0+: Severely obese (Class III)

If you're 160–165 cm tall at 71.2 kg, you fall into the overweight range. If you're taller (170+ cm), you're in the healthy weight range. However, BMI has limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, and waist circumference also matters. Your GP can provide personalised advice about what your weight means for your individual health.

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

How do I convert 71.2 kg to pounds?

Is 71.2 kg a healthy weight?

It depends on your height. At 170 cm or taller, 71.2 kg is typically in the healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9). At shorter heights (under 165 cm), this weight may fall into the overweight category. Calculate your personal BMI using our free tool above to see where you stand.

What's my BMI at 71.2 kg and 173 cm?

At 71.2 kg and 173 cm (5ft 8in), your BMI is approximately 23.8, which falls into the healthy weight range according to NHS guidelines (18.5–24.9). This suggests a healthy weight for your height.

Why does BMI matter if I feel fine?

BMI is a screening tool that helps identify health risks associated with weight. Even if you feel well, excess weight increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Your GP can assess your overall health, not just BMI, when considering your individual risk factors.

What if I'm very muscular — is BMI still accurate?

BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so very muscular individuals may have a higher BMI despite low body fat. Your GP or a healthcare professional can assess your health more comprehensively, considering waist circumference, fitness level, and medical history alongside BMI.
