What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges At Different Heights

A weight of 71.5 kg can be healthy, overweight, or obese depending on your height. The NHS uses BMI (body mass index) to determine healthy weight ranges. Here are three concrete examples using standard UK heights:

  • At 5ft 2in (158cm): 71.5 kg gives a BMI of 28.6 — this falls in the overweight range (25.0–29.9). Healthy range for this height: 50–63 kg (7st 12lbs–9st 13lbs).
  • At 5ft 7in (170cm): 71.5 kg gives a BMI of 25.1 — this is just above the healthy weight threshold. Healthy range for this height: 55–74 kg (8st 9lbs–11st 9lbs).
  • At 5ft 10in (178cm): 71.5 kg gives a BMI of 22.6 — this is solidly in the healthy weight range (18.5–24.9). Healthy range for this height: 59–79 kg (9st 4lbs–12st 6lbs).

NHS Guidance And What To Do Next

The NHS recommends a healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9 for most UK adults. If you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, lower thresholds apply (18.5–22.9). Beyond BMI, waist circumference also matters: men should aim for below 94cm (37in), women below 80cm (31.5in). If 71.5 kg puts you in the overweight or obese range, your GP can discuss personalised next steps — which may include lifestyle changes, dietary support, or in some cases, prescription weight loss treatment. Remember, even a 5–10% reduction in body weight can improve health significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

71.5 kg equals 11 stone 3 pounds (or 11.2 stone). To convert kg to stone, divide by 6.35029. To convert kilograms to stone and pounds more precisely, 71.5 kg = 11 stone + 3 pounds. Use our weight converter above to check other values instantly.

Is 71.5 kg a healthy weight?

It depends on your height. At 5ft 7in, 71.5 kg is just above the healthy range. At 5ft 10in, it's healthy. At 5ft 2in, it's overweight. Use our BMI calculator above, entering your height and weight, to see your exact status according to NHS guidelines.

What is the healthy weight range for my height?

Healthy weight ranges vary by height. For example: at 5ft 6in (168cm), healthy weight is 54–72 kg (8st 7lbs–11st 5lbs). Calculate your personal healthy range using our free BMI calculator above by entering your height — it will show you the exact range for your measurements.

Should I lose weight if I'm 71.5 kg?

What other measurements matter besides weight?

Waist circumference is important alongside weight. The NHS recommends men keep waist below 94cm (37in) and women below 80cm (31.5in). BMI also has limitations — it doesn't account for muscle mass. Your GP can discuss your overall health picture, not just the number on the scales.
