What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
BMI at Different Heights for 72.5kg
Since BMI is calculated by dividing weight by height squared, the same kilogram weight produces very different BMI results depending on height. Here are six examples of what your BMI would be at different heights if you weigh 72.5kg:
- At 160cm (5ft 3in): BMI = 28.3 (Overweight)
- At 165cm (5ft 5in): BMI = 26.6 (Overweight)
- At 170cm (5ft 7in): BMI = 25.1 (Healthy weight)
- At 175cm (5ft 9in): BMI = 23.7 (Healthy weight)
- At 180cm (5ft 11in): BMI = 22.4 (Healthy weight)
- At 185cm (6ft 1in): BMI = 21.2 (Healthy weight)
As you can see, at shorter heights, 72.5kg falls into the overweight range. At taller heights, it sits comfortably in the healthy weight category. To convert 72.5kg to stone accurately for your own health context, calculate your personal BMI using the calculator on this page or check with your GP for personalised guidance.

Understanding NHS BMI Categories and Limitations
The NHS BMI categories are: underweight (below 18.5), healthy weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25.0–29.9), obese (30.0–34.9), and severely obese (40.0+). However, BMI has important limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat — athletes may have high BMI but low body fat. It also doesn't account for where fat is stored around your body, which matters for health risk. Additionally, if you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds because these groups face higher health risks at the same BMI level. Your GP can give you more personalised advice about what your weight means for your individual health.
