What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

BMI at Different Heights for 72.6kg

At 72.6kg, your BMI varies significantly depending on your height. Here are typical BMI values across common UK adult heights:

  • 5ft 2in (158cm): BMI 27.0 — Overweight category
  • 5ft 5in (165cm): BMI 24.9 — Healthy weight (top of range)
  • 5ft 8in (173cm): BMI 22.9 — Healthy weight
  • 5ft 10in (178cm): BMI 21.6 — Healthy weight
  • 6ft 0in (183cm): BMI 20.5 — Healthy weight

According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI is 18.5 to 24.9. At 72.6kg, whether you fall into the healthy weight, overweight, or obese category depends entirely on your height. Shorter individuals at this weight may exceed healthy ranges, while taller adults will likely be comfortably within them. Understanding NHS BMI Categories

The NHS uses standardised BMI ranges to assess health weight status for UK adults:

  • Below 18.5: Underweight
  • 18.5 to 24.9: Healthy weight
  • 25.0 to 29.9: Overweight
  • 30.0 to 34.9: Obese (Class I)
  • 35.0 and above: Severely obese

If you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds. For these groups, a healthy BMI starts at 18.5 and healthy range ends at 22.9. BMI is a useful screening tool, but it has limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, and it doesn't account for where fat is stored. Your GP can give personalised health advice based on your individual circumstances.
