What's 74 Kilograms in Stone and What's Your BMI?
74 kilograms converts to 11 stone 8.2 pounds (11st 8lbs). However, your BMI depends on your height, not just your weight. At 74kg, you could have a BMI ranging from approximately 21.5 to 29.8 depending on whether you're 180cm or 160cm tall. This means 74kg could fall into the healthy weight or overweight category according to NHS guidelines. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your exact BMI by entering your height alongside this weight.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
74 Kg BMI At Different Heights
To understand how kilograms convert to stone and what your BMI means, height is essential. Here's how 74kg stacks up across common UK heights:
- 160cm (5ft 3in) — BMI 28.9 (overweight category)
- 165cm (5ft 5in) — BMI 27.2 (overweight category)
- 170cm (5ft 7in) — BMI 25.6 (overweight category)
- 175cm (5ft 9in) — BMI 24.2 (healthy weight category)
- 180cm (5ft 11in) — BMI 22.8 (healthy weight category)
- 185cm (6ft 1in) — BMI 21.6 (healthy weight category)
As you can see, the same weight in kilograms produces very different BMI results. Someone at 74kg could be in the overweight range or the healthy weight range — it depends entirely on their height. This is why converting weight between kg, stone, and pounds alone isn't enough to assess health.

Understanding NHS BMI Categories and Limitations
According to NHS guidance, a healthy BMI for UK adults is between 18.5 and 24.9. At 74kg, you're in the healthy range if you're 175cm or taller, but in the overweight category (BMI 25–29.9) if you're shorter. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds — healthy weight is BMI 18.5–22.9.
However, BMI has important limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle mass and fat, so athletes may have high BMI but low body fat. It also doesn't account for where fat is stored around your body. Your GP can provide personalised health guidance based on your individual circumstances, not just your BMI number.

Can I trust BMI to assess my health?
