What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges by Height at 81.5kg

At 81.5kg, your weight status depends on your height. Use this table to see whether you fall into a healthy range according to NHS guidelines:

  • 5ft 2in (157cm): BMI 33.0 — Obese (Class I). Outside healthy range.
  • 5ft 7in (170cm): BMI 28.2 — Overweight. Just outside healthy range (18.5–24.9).
  • 5ft 11in (180cm): BMI 25.3 — Overweight (just above healthy, which ends at 24.9).
  • 6ft 2in (188cm): BMI 23.1 — Healthy weight. Within the healthy BMI range.

The same weight creates very different health profiles depending on your height. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds, so your healthy weight range may be slightly lower.

NHS Guidance: What to Do If You're Outside the Healthy Range

If 81.5kg puts you in the overweight or obese category based on your height, the NHS recommends a gradual approach. Aim to lose weight at a rate of 0.5 to 1 kg per week through a combination of reduced-calorie eating and increased physical activity. Even a 5% reduction in body weight can improve blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels. Waist measurement also matters: men should aim for under 94cm (37in) and women under 80cm (31.5in). Speak to your GP about weight management options, including lifestyle support, structured programmes, or prescription weight loss medication if eligible. Track your progress with our free progress tracker to stay motivated.
