What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges by Height

To understand if 81.6 kg is healthy for you, we need to look at how it converts across metric to imperial weight measurements and then compare it to your height. When you convert kilograms to stone using the standard conversion, 81.6 kg equals approximately 12 stone 11 pounds (or 12st 11lbs in UK measurements).

Here are three real examples:

  • At 5ft 4in (163cm): 81.6 kg gives a BMI of 30.5 — this falls in the obese range according to NHS guidelines (BMI 30+)
  • At 5ft 9in (175cm): 81.6 kg gives a BMI of 26.6 — this falls in the overweight range (BMI 25–29.9)
  • At 6ft 0in (183cm): 81.6 kg gives a BMI of 24.4 — this falls in the healthy weight range (BMI 18.5–24.9)

NHS Healthy Weight Guidance

The NHS recommends a healthy BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for most UK adults. If you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, lower thresholds apply (18.5–22.9). Beyond BMI, the NHS also emphasises waist measurement as a health indicator — men should aim for under 94cm (37 inches), and women under 80cm (31.5 inches).

If your weight of 81.6 kg places you outside the healthy range for your height, don't be discouraged. Even a 5–clinically studied weight loss can improve blood pressure, blood sugar control, and overall health. Your GP can discuss personalised approaches including lifestyle changes, and if appropriate, referral to specialist weight management services.
