What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

How to Convert 85kg to Stone

The conversion formula is straightforward: divide kilograms by 6.35029 to get stone. For 85kg: 85 ÷ 6.35029 = 13.40 stone. To express this in stone and pounds, multiply the decimal by 14 (since 1 stone = 14 pounds): 0.40 × 14 = 5.6 pounds, giving you 13 stone and 5 pounds.

Alternatively, convert directly to pounds: 85kg × 2.20462 = 187.4 lbs. Then divide by 14 to get stone: 187.4 ÷ 14 = 13st 5lbs.

  • 85kg = 13 stone 5 pounds (13st 5lbs)
  • 85kg = 187.4 pounds (187.4 lbs)
  • This conversion uses the international standard kilogram-to-pound ratio

Is 85kg a Healthy Weight?

Whether 85kg is healthy depends on your height, age, and individual health factors. Use our free BMI calculator above to determine your personal BMI, which gives an evidence-based health assessment. For example, at 5ft 8in (173cm), 85kg gives a BMI of approximately 28.4, which falls in the overweight category according to NHS guidelines (BMI 25–29.9). At 5ft 10in (178cm), the same weight produces a BMI of about 26.9, also overweight.

Remember that BMI is a screening tool with limitations—it doesn't account for muscle mass or fat distribution. Your GP can provide personalised health advice based on your individual circumstances, medical history, and weight-related health conditions.
