What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
BMI at 88kg — By Height
Your BMI at 88kg varies significantly depending on your height. Here's what your BMI would be at different heights:
- 5ft 4in (163cm): BMI 33.0 — Obese (Class I)
- 5ft 6in (168cm): BMI 31.1 — Obese (Class I)
- 5ft 8in (173cm): BMI 29.3 — Overweight
- 5ft 10in (178cm): BMI 27.6 — Overweight
- 6ft 0in (183cm): BMI 26.3 — Overweight
- 6ft 2in (188cm): BMI 24.9 — Healthy weight
These examples show how height dramatically affects what your weight means for your health. A weight of 88kg may be healthy for a taller adult but in the obese category for someone shorter. Use the weight converter on this page to check different weights in kilos, stone, and lbs instantly.

NHS BMI Categories and What They Mean
According to NHS guidelines, the BMI categories are: healthy weight (18.5–24.9), overweight (25–29.9), obese Class I (30–34.9), obese Class II (35–39.9), and severely obese (40+). At 88kg, depending on your height, you may fall into the overweight or obese range. If you're from a South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean background, the NHS recommends lower thresholds — healthy weight starts at 18.5 and overweight at 23.0. Remember, BMI doesn't account for muscle mass, so athletes may have a higher BMI but lower body fat. Your GP can provide personalised guidance about what your BMI means for your individual health.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
How do I convert 88kg to stone and pounds?
Divide 88kg by 6.35 to get stone (approximately 13.86 stone), then multiply the decimal by 14 to get pounds. 88kg = 13 stone 12lbs. Alternatively, multiply 88 by 2.20462 to convert directly to pounds (approximately 194lbs).
Is 88kg a healthy weight?
Whether 88kg is healthy depends entirely on your height and body composition. At 88kg, if you're 5ft 8in tall, your BMI is 29.3 (overweight). If you're 6ft 2in, your BMI is 24.9 (healthy weight). Use our free BMI calculator above to check your specific BMI instantly.
What's the difference between stone, pounds, and kilograms?
Stone and pounds are imperial measurements used in the UK; kilograms are metric. One stone equals 14 pounds exactly. One kilogram equals 0.157473 stone or 2.20462 pounds. The weight converter on this page converts between all three instantly.
Should I lose weight at 88kg?
This depends on your height, age, health conditions, and muscle mass. If your BMI is in the healthy range for your height, you may not need to lose weight. If it's above 25, your GP can discuss whether weight loss would benefit your health. Individual circumstances vary, so speak with your healthcare provider.
Can I use BMI to track my fitness progress?
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. If you're building muscle through exercise, your BMI might not change much even though your body composition improves. Track progress using waist circumference, how you feel, and fitness levels alongside BMI.
