What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

BMI at 9.9 Stone — Examples by Height

To convert kilograms to stone and understand your BMI, you need both weight and height. Here's what BMI 9.9 stone gives at common UK heights:

  • 5ft 2in (157cm): BMI 25.7 — Overweight category
  • 5ft 4in (163cm): BMI 24.0 — Healthy weight range
  • 5ft 6in (168cm): BMI 22.7 — Healthy weight range
  • 5ft 8in (173cm): BMI 21.6 — Healthy weight range
  • 5ft 10in (178cm): BMI 20.5 — Healthy weight range
  • 6ft 0in (183cm): BMI 19.5 — Healthy weight range

As you can see, how many stone and pounds you carry affects health differently at different heights. Taller individuals tend to have lower BMI values at the same weight — a stone to kg conversion shows 9.9 stone (62.8 kg) is relatively light for taller adults but may be overweight for shorter individuals.

Understanding Your BMI Category

The NHS uses these BMI ranges for adults:

  • Below 18.5: Underweight
  • 18.5–24.9: Healthy weight
  • 25.0–29.9: Overweight
  • 30.0+: Obese

Remember that BMI is a screening tool and has limitations — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or where fat is stored. Your waist circumference and overall fitness matter too. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults, the NHS recommends lower thresholds. Use the weight converter on this page to check your weight in different units, and speak with your GP for personalised health advice about what your weight means for you specifically.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is 9.9 stone in pounds exactly?

9.9 stone equals 138.6 pounds. Since 1 stone = 14 pounds exactly, multiply 9.9 by 14. You can use our free weight converter above to switch between stone, pounds, and kilograms instantly for any weight.

What is 9.9 stone in kilograms?

9.9 stone is approximately 62.8 kg. Using the stone to kg conversion formula (stone × 6.35029 = kg), this weight is quite light — around the lower end of a healthy weight for most UK adults, depending on height.

Is 9.9 stone a healthy weight?

It depends on your height. At 9.9 stone, a person who is 5ft 4in would have a healthy BMI of 24.0. Someone 5ft 2in would have BMI 25.7 (overweight), while someone 6ft tall would have BMI 19.5 (healthy). Use our BMI calculator to check your personal BMI.

How do I calculate BMI from weight in stone?

Convert stone to kg first (stone × 6.35029), then use BMI = weight(kg) ÷ height(m)². For example, 9.9 stone (62.8 kg) at 1.73m gives BMI = 62.8 ÷ (1.73)² = 21.0. Our free BMI calculator does this automatically.

What's the healthy weight range at my height?

A healthy BMI is 18.5–24.9. To find your healthy weight range, multiply 18.5 and 24.9 by your height in metres squared. For example, at 5ft 8in (1.73m), healthy weight is roughly 8st 10lbs to 11st 10lbs. Use our BMI calculator above for your exact range.
