What Is 90kg in Stone and What Does It Mean for BMI?
90kg converts to 14 stone 2.2lbs in UK measurements. However, whether this weight is healthy depends entirely on your height — the same weight gives a very different BMI for a 5ft 2in person compared to a 6ft 2in person. Use our free BMI calculator above to check your personal BMI instantly, or read on to see how 90kg translates to BMI at common heights and what the NHS categories mean for your health.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
90kg BMI at Different Heights
Since BMI is calculated using both weight and height, a weight of 90kg produces different BMI values depending on how tall you are. Here's what 90kg gives you at standard UK heights:
- At 5ft 4in (163cm): BMI of 34.9 — falls in the Obese Class I category
- At 5ft 6in (168cm): BMI of 32.1 — falls in the Obese Class I category
- At 5ft 8in (173cm): BMI of 29.6 — falls in the Overweight category (just under obese threshold)
- At 5ft 10in (178cm): BMI of 27.3 — falls in the Overweight category
- At 6ft (183cm): BMI of 25.3 — falls in the Healthy weight category
- At 6ft 2in (188cm): BMI of 23.5 — falls in the Healthy weight category
These examples show how height dramatically changes what the same weight means for your health. To find your exact BMI using the kg to stone metric, calculate it with our weight converter and BMI calculator above.

NHS BMI Categories and What They Mean
The NHS uses standardised BMI categories to assess weight-related health risk. A BMI below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is healthy weight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 and above is obese. However, BMI has important limitations — it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so athletes may have a high BMI without excess body fat. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds because these groups face higher health risks at lower weights. If you're 90kg and your BMI falls in the overweight or obese category, your GP can discuss your individual health context and whether lifestyle changes or support might be helpful.
