What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

What BMI Does 93.7kg Give You at Different Heights?

  • At 170cm (5ft 7in): BMI of 32.4 — falls in the Obese Class I category
  • At 175cm (5ft 9in): BMI of 30.6 — falls in the Obese Class I category

Understanding NHS BMI Categories and Their Meaning

The NHS uses standard BMI categories to assess health risk. A BMI below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is a healthy weight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese. However, BMI has important limitations: it does not distinguish between muscle and fat, does not account for where fat is stored on your body, and may be less accurate for very muscular people or older adults. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults, the NHS recommends lower thresholds — healthy weight starts at 18.5 and overweight begins at 23. Your GP can provide individual health assessment beyond BMI alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is 93.7kg in stones and pounds exactly?

93.7kg equals approximately 14 stone 10 lbs. To convert kilograms to stone, divide by 6.35. To convert to stones and pounds, multiply 93.7kg by 2.20462 to get 206.4 lbs, then divide by 14 to get 14 stone with 10 lbs remaining. Our weight converter makes this calculation instant.

Is 93.7kg a healthy weight?

Whether 93.7kg is healthy depends entirely on your height. At 180cm it may be overweight; at 160cm it falls into the obese category. Your GP can advise whether this weight is healthy for you personally based on your age, height, health conditions, and overall fitness level.

What does my BMI tell me about my health?

BMI is a screening tool that estimates health risk based on weight and height. A high BMI increases risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other conditions. However, BMI does not account for muscle mass or fat distribution. Your GP should assess your individual health risk using BMI alongside other factors like waist measurement and blood pressure.

How much weight would I need to lose to reach a healthy BMI?

At 93.7kg, the amount needed depends on your height. For example, at 175cm (5ft 9in), a healthy BMI upper limit is around 74kg, meaning a loss of about 19.7kg. Use our free BMI calculator to check your target weight range, then discuss sustainable weight loss approaches with your GP.

Can I use BMI to track weight loss progress?

BMI can be one useful measure, but it is not the only indicator of health progress. Weight loss of 5–10% of body weight significantly improves health even if you remain in an overweight category. Track your progress using multiple measures: how you feel, fitness improvements, and changes in waist measurement alongside BMI.
