What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

NHS BMI Categories & Important Limitations
The NHS classifies BMI ranges as: healthy weight 18.5–24.9, overweight 25–29.9, obese Class I 30–34.9, Class II 35–39.9, and severely obese 40+. For people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, lower thresholds apply—healthy weight is 18.5–22.9, and overweight starts at 23. BMI is a useful screening tool, but it has important limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes may have high BMI but low body fat. It also doesn't account for where fat is stored (waist measurement matters too) or changes with age. Your GP can give you personalised health advice based on your individual circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
How do I convert 93kg to stone exactly?
93kg divided by 6.35029 equals 14.64 stone, or 14 stone 9 pounds (14st 9lbs). For everyday use, 14st 8lbs is the standard rounded conversion. You can also use our free weight converter above for instant conversions between kg, stone, and lbs.
What BMI should I aim for?
The NHS healthy BMI range is 18.5 to 24.9 for most adults. At 93kg, you'd need to be taller than about 189cm to fall in this range. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean adults, the healthy range is 18.5–22.9. Your GP can advise what's healthy for you personally.
Is 93kg overweight?
Whether 93kg is overweight depends on your height. At 93kg, anyone under 175cm would typically fall in the overweight or obese category according to BMI. Use our free BMI calculator above to check your personal BMI and see exactly where you stand according to NHS guidelines.
Can BMI alone tell me if I'm healthy?
No. BMI is a screening tool, not a complete health picture. It doesn't account for muscle mass, where fat is stored, fitness level, or other health conditions. A healthy waist circumference (under 94cm for men, 80cm for women) matters too. Your GP can assess your overall health.
How much weight would I need to lose to reach a healthy BMI at 93kg?
This depends on your height. At 165cm, you'd need to reach about 67kg for a healthy BMI. At 175cm, around 75kg. Use our GLP-1 weight loss calculator to explore realistic targets, or ask your GP for personalised guidance on healthy weight loss goals.
