What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Understanding NHS BMI Categories

According to NHS guidelines, BMI categories are: Underweight (below 18.5), Healthy weight (18.5–24.9), Overweight (25.0–29.9), and Obese (30.0 and above). For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean backgrounds, lower thresholds apply — healthy weight is 18.5–22.9, overweight starts at 23.0. At 95.4 kg, where you fall depends on your height. BMI is a useful screening tool, but it has limitations — it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, and doesn't account for where fat is stored. Your GP can give you personalised guidance about what your BMI means for your individual health.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is 95.4 kg in pounds?

95.4 kg equals 210.1 pounds. To convert kilograms to pounds, multiply by 2.20462. In UK stone and pounds, 95.4 kg is 15 stone 0.1 lbs. Our weight converter above can instantly convert between metric to imperial weight measurements.

Is 95.4 kg overweight?

It depends on your height. At 95.4 kg, someone 5ft 3in would have a BMI of 30.1 (obese), while someone 5ft 11in would have a BMI of 23.4 (healthy weight). Use our free BMI calculator to find out your personal BMI based on your exact height.

What is a healthy weight at my height?

A healthy BMI range is 18.5–24.9 according to NHS guidelines. To find your healthy weight range, multiply your height in metres squared by 18.5 and 24.9. Alternatively, use our BMI calculator above or ask your GP for personalised advice.

Why does height matter so much for weight?

Height affects how weight is distributed across your body. Taller people can carry more weight while maintaining a healthy BMI because weight is spread over a larger frame. This is why BMI combines both weight and height — it's a more accurate health indicator than weight alone.

Should I lose weight at 95.4 kg?

Whether weight loss is recommended depends on your height, overall health, and any weight-related conditions. Your GP can assess your individual situation. If weight loss is appropriate, the NHS recommends a steady rate of 0.5–1 kg per week alongside lifestyle changes. Track your progress with our free progress tracker.
