What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

95kg BMI at Different Heights

At 95kg, your BMI varies significantly depending on your height. Here are typical examples:

  • At 5ft 4in (163cm): BMI of 32.3 — Obese Class I (NHS category)
  • At 5ft 6in (168cm): BMI of 30.6 — Obese Class I
  • At 5ft 8in (173cm): BMI of 28.2 — Overweight (NHS category)
  • At 5ft 10in (178cm): BMI of 26.7 — Overweight
  • At 6ft 0in (183cm): BMI of 25.4 — Healthy weight (NHS category)
  • At 6ft 2in (188cm): BMI of 24.3 — Healthy weight

These examples show how the same weight of 95kg can be healthy for a taller person but overweight for a shorter person. Use the weight converter on this page to convert 95kg to stones and pounds, then calculate your BMI with our free BMI calculator to find your personalised result.

Understanding NHS BMI Categories

The NHS classifies BMI into five main categories. A BMI below 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is healthy weight, 25.0–29.9 is overweight, 30.0–34.9 is obese (Class I), and 35.0 and above is severely obese. If you're of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds: healthy weight is 18.5–22.9 and overweight starts at 23.0. BMI is a useful screening tool but has important limitations—it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, and doesn't account for where fat is stored. Your GP can provide personalised advice about what your BMI means for your individual health.
