What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges by Height

At 97kg, whether you are in a healthy weight range depends on your height. Here are three real examples:

  • If you are 1.85m (6ft 1in) tall: 97kg gives a BMI of 28.3, which is overweight according to NHS guidelines (healthy range is 18.5–24.9). A healthy weight for this height would be 63–83kg (10st 0lbs to 13st 1lb).
  • If you are 1.75m (5ft 9in) tall: 97kg gives a BMI of 31.6, which is obese according to NHS guidelines. A healthy weight for this height would be 57–75kg (9st 0lbs to 11st 11lbs).
  • If you are 1.65m (5ft 5in) tall: 97kg gives a BMI of 35.6, which is obese (Class II) according to NHS guidelines. A healthy weight for this height would be 50–66kg (7st 12lbs to 10st 6lbs).

NHS Guidance and What to Do Next

The NHS recommends a healthy BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. If your BMI is 25 or above, your GP may suggest lifestyle changes including a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Remember that waist measurement also matters — regardless of weight, a waist above 94cm (37in) for men or 80cm (31.5in) for women indicates increased health risk.

If you're concerned about your weight, speak to your GP who can assess your individual health picture, discuss any weight-related conditions you may have, and recommend appropriate next steps. Weight loss of even 5–10% of your body weight can significantly improve health outcomes. Track your progress using our free progress tracker as you work towards your goals.
