What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

99kg BMI at Different Heights

99kg in stone and pounds is 15st 8lbs, but your BMI varies significantly depending on your height. Here's what 99kg gives you at common UK heights:

  • 5ft 3in (160cm): BMI 31.2 — Obese (Class I)
  • 5ft 6in (168cm): BMI 29.0 — Overweight

  • 5ft 11in (180cm): BMI 25.2 — Healthy weight
  • 6ft 1in (185cm): BMI 23.5 — Healthy weight

NHS BMI Categories and Limitations

According to NHS guidance, a BMI of 25 to 29.9 is classed as overweight, and 30 or above is obese. At 99kg, whether you fall into either category depends entirely on your height. BMI is a useful screening tool but has important limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes or very muscular individuals may have a high BMI despite low body fat. BMI also doesn't account for where fat is stored (waist circumference matters too) or vary by age. Your GP can provide personalised advice about what your BMI and weight mean for your individual health.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is 99kg in stone and pounds exactly?

99kg equals 15 stone and 8.4 pounds (15st 8lbs). To convert kilograms to stone, divide the weight by 6.35029. For quick conversions between kg, stone, and lbs, use the free weight converter on this page.

Is 99kg overweight or obese?

It depends on your height. At shorter heights (below 5ft 6in), 99kg typically falls into the obese range. At average to taller heights, it may be overweight or even healthy weight. Use our BMI calculator to check your exact category based on your personal height.

What BMI does 99kg give at 5ft 9in?

At 5ft 9in (175cm), a weight of 99kg gives a BMI of approximately 27.0, which falls into the overweight category according to NHS guidelines (BMI 25.0–29.9).

Can I rely on BMI alone to assess my health?

BMI is a helpful starting point but has limitations. It doesn't show the difference between muscle and fat, and doesn't account for waist circumference or where fat is stored. The NHS recommends also measuring waist circumference — over 94cm in men or 80cm in women indicates increased health risk.

How do I know if 99kg is a healthy weight for me?

Calculate your BMI using your personal height with our free BMI calculator on this page, then discuss the result with your GP. They can advise whether your weight is healthy given your age, muscle mass, medical history, and individual circumstances.
