Age Height and Weight Chart for UK Adults

Age, height, and weight charts help you understand whether your weight falls within a healthy range for your height and age. In the UK, we use BMI (Body Mass Index) and NHS guidelines to determine healthy weight ranges, which apply to adults of all ages. Rather than focusing on specific age-based targets, the NHS recommends a consistent healthy BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 regardless of age (with lower thresholds for some ethnic groups). Your height is the most important factor in determining your healthy weight range. Use our free BMI calculator above to check where you fall, then consult our weight converter to see your measurements in stone, pounds, or kilograms.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges by Height in the UK

The NHS provides a healthy weight range for each height. Rather than an "age-based chart," the same BMI categories apply to all adults aged 18 and over—your height is what matters most:

  • 5ft (152cm): healthy weight range 47–63 kg (7st 5lbs–9st 13lbs)
  • 5ft 4in (163cm): healthy weight range 52–70 kg (8st 2lbs–11st 0lbs)
  • 5ft 8in (173cm): healthy weight range 55–74 kg (8st 9lbs–11st 9lbs)
  • 6ft (183cm): healthy weight range 63–84 kg (9st 13lbs–13st 3lbs)

These ranges assume a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults, the NHS recommends lower thresholds (18.5–22.9), as these populations face higher health risks at lower BMI levels. Does Age Affect Healthy Weight?

Unlike children (who have age-specific growth charts), healthy weight ranges for adults do not change based on age. A 25-year-old and a 65-year-old of the same height and BMI fall into the same category according to NHS weight management guidance. However, age does affect how your body composition changes: muscle naturally decreases with age, which can affect metabolism and how your weight is distributed. This is why regular weight management and exercise become increasingly important as you age. Your GP can provide personalised advice if you have concerns about your weight at any age. Use our weight converter to check your current weight across different measurements and track progress with our free progress tracker.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Is there a specific weight chart for different ages?

No. The NHS uses the same BMI categories (18.5–24.9 for healthy weight) for all adults aged 18 and over, regardless of age. Your height is the main factor determining healthy weight ranges. Age-specific charts are only used for children, who have age-dependent growth patterns.

What if I'm overweight according to the BMI chart—does age matter?

Age does not change whether you're classified as overweight (BMI 25–29.9) or obese (BMI 30+). However, age can affect how quickly you lose weight and what health support might be appropriate for you. Your GP can advise on weight management strategies tailored to your age and health needs.

Why do older adults sometimes weigh more but feel healthy?

Older adults may experience changes in body composition—muscle decreases and is replaced by fat, which can shift weight distribution even at the same BMI. This is why regular exercise and weight management remain important throughout life. Your GP or a health professional can assess your overall health beyond just weight.

How do I find my healthy weight range using the UK health guide?

Find your height on a healthy weight chart, then locate the corresponding weight range (usually shown as a BMI of 18.5–24.9). Alternatively, use our free BMI calculator above by entering your height and weight to see instantly where you fall. For ethnic-specific guidance, consult NHS resources or your GP.

Can I use an age height and weight chart to set weight loss goals?

Yes. Once you've identified your healthy weight range using the NHS BMI guidelines for your height, that range becomes your goal. Use our weight converter to express this in stone, pounds, or kilograms—whichever you prefer. Track your progress toward that goal with our free progress tracker.
