Age Height and Weight Chart — UK Health Guidance
A chart of age, height and weight can help you understand whether your measurements fall within a healthy range for UK adults. Unlike children, healthy weight in adults depends mainly on height rather than age. The NHS uses BMI (body mass index) as the primary screening tool to assess healthy weight for adults of all ages. This guide explains UK health standards, how to use height and weight charts, and how to calculate your own healthy weight range using our free BMI calculator and weight converter.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
NHS Height and Weight Standards for UK Adults
The NHS does not publish a single height and weight chart for all adults, because healthy weight varies significantly based on height and individual body composition. Instead, the NHS recommends using BMI (body mass index) as a practical screening tool. A healthy BMI for most UK adults is between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m². However, for adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds: a healthy BMI range is 18.5 to 22.9.
- Healthy weight (BMI 18.5–24.9): Typically associated with better long-term health outcomes
- Overweight (BMI 25.0–29.9): Increased health risk, weight management advised
- Obese (BMI 30.0+): Significantly increased health risks including type 2 diabetes and heart disease
Your GP can provide personalised weight management guidance based on your individual health profile, not just your age or measurements alone.

Using Height and Weight for UK Health Assessment
Rather than relying on a fixed chart, the most practical approach is to calculate your healthy weight range for your height. For example, an adult who is 1.73m tall (5ft 8in) should aim for a weight between approximately 55.4kg (8st 10lbs) and 74.5kg (11st 10lbs) to fall within the healthy BMI range. You can calculate your own healthy weight instantly using our free BMI calculator above. Remember that BMI has limitations — it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes or very muscular individuals may have a higher BMI despite being healthy. Waist circumference is also important: the NHS recommends men keep waist measurement below 94cm (37in) and women below 80cm (31.5in).

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
Is there a standard UK height and weight chart for adults?
No. The NHS doesn't use a single height and weight chart for adults. Instead, it recommends using BMI (body mass index) to assess healthy weight, because healthy weight varies significantly by height and body composition. Your GP can provide personalised guidance based on your individual health factors.
What is the healthy weight range for a 5ft 9in (175cm) tall person in the UK?
For someone 175cm tall, the healthy BMI weight range is approximately 56.5kg to 75.9kg (8st 13lbs to 11st 13lbs). However, individual healthy weight depends on muscle mass, age, and health conditions. Use our free BMI calculator to calculate your personal range, then discuss with your GP.
Do UK height and weight charts change with age?
Not significantly. For adults, healthy weight depends mainly on height, not age. However, older adults may naturally lose muscle mass and gain fat, so discussing healthy weight targets with your GP becomes more important as you age.
Why doesn't the NHS use a simple height and weight chart?
Because BMI is more accurate than a simple chart. A chart can't account for individual differences in muscle mass, bone density, and body composition. Two people of the same height and weight can have very different health profiles. BMI provides a better screening tool.
How can I check if my height and weight are healthy?
Calculate your BMI using our free BMI calculator on this page — it takes seconds. If your result falls in the healthy range (18.5–24.9 for most adults), you're in a good position. For personalised advice, especially if you have health conditions, speak to your GP about weight management and NHS health guidance.
