Does Apple Cider Vinegar Help with Weight Loss?

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is often marketed as a weight loss aid, but the evidence for significant weight loss is limited. While some small studies suggest it may have modest metabolic effects, it is not a substitute for proven weight management strategies. In the UK, the NHS recommends a combination of calorie deficit, increased physical activity, and where appropriate, prescription weight loss medication. If you're exploring weight loss options, it's important to understand what the science actually shows about apple cider vinegar and how it compares to evidence-based approaches.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

What Does the Evidence Show About Apple Cider Vinegar?

Research on apple cider vinegar for weight loss remains limited and inconclusive. A small 2009 study published in Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Biochemistry found that participants who consumed vinegar lost modest amounts of weight — approximately 1.2 kg (2.6 lbs) over 12 weeks — but this was alongside a calorie-restricted diet. Importantly, the weight loss was likely due to the calorie deficit, not the vinegar itself.

Some studies suggest acetic acid (the active component in vinegar) may have minor effects on satiety and blood sugar control, but the evidence is weak and results are inconsistent across research. The NHS does not currently recommend apple cider vinegar as a weight loss treatment, and it is not part of any NHS weight management pathway.

A meaningful calorie deficit of around 500 kcal per day — achieved through dietary changes and increased physical activity — typically results in sustainable weight loss of approximately 0.5 to 1 kg per week. Apple cider vinegar alone cannot create this deficit.

Proven Alternatives: NHS-Supported Weight Loss Approaches

For sustainable weight management in the UK, the NHS recommends structured dietary changes, regular physical activity, and behavioural support. If these lifestyle approaches are not sufficient, prescription weight loss medication may be appropriate. GLP-1 medications such as Wegovy (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) are licensed in the UK for weight management and have robust clinical trial evidence supporting their effectiveness.

Unlike apple cider vinegar, these medications have demonstrated average weight losses of 15–21% of body weight in clinical trials when used alongside a reduced-calorie diet. Access to these treatments is through NHS specialist services or private prescribing following a clinical assessment. Use our GLP-1 weight loss calculator to explore potential outcomes, and speak with your GP about which approach is right for your individual situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

Will drinking apple cider vinegar help me lose weight?

Probably not significantly on its own. While small studies suggest vinegar may have minor metabolic effects, any weight loss observed was due to overall calorie reduction, not the vinegar itself. For sustainable weight loss in the UK, the NHS recommends creating a calorie deficit through diet and exercise. If lifestyle changes alone are insufficient, prescription weight loss medications with proven clinical evidence are available through your GP.

Is apple cider vinegar safe to use for weight loss?

Apple cider vinegar is generally safe in small amounts, but regular consumption can erode tooth enamel and may interact with certain medications, including diabetes treatments. Never replace medical advice with vinegar. If you're considering weight loss approaches, speak with your GP to discuss evidence-based options that are appropriate for your health and circumstances.

How much weight can I expect to lose with apple cider vinegar?

The research shows minimal weight loss attributable specifically to apple cider vinegar — typically less than 1 kg over several weeks. Compare this to NHS weight loss recommendations of 0.5–1 kg per week with a proper calorie deficit, or the 15–21% average body weight loss seen in clinical trials of GLP-1 medications. For realistic expectations, discuss your target with your GP.

Can I use apple cider vinegar alongside prescription weight loss medication?

This is a question for your GP or prescriber. While apple cider vinegar is unlikely to be harmful in small amounts, there are no studies on combining it with GLP-1 medications like Wegovy or Mounjaro. Always inform your prescriber of everything you consume, including dietary supplements and vinegars, to avoid any potential interactions.

What's the difference between apple cider vinegar and actual weight loss treatments the NHS offers?

Apple cider vinegar has minimal scientific evidence and is not part of any NHS weight management pathway. Prescription weight loss medications such as Mounjaro and Wegovy are licensed, evidence-based treatments with clinical trial support showing significant weight loss. The NHS recommends discussing with your GP which approach — lifestyle changes, medication, or both — is appropriate for your health needs. ```
