What Is the Average Body Weight For Your Height?

Average body weight varies significantly by height, age, and individual factors. In the UK, an average adult man weighs around 85.7 kg (13 stone 7 lbs) at 175.3 cm (5 feet 9 inches), whilst an average woman weighs approximately 71.6 kg (11 stone 3 lbs) at 161.6 cm (5 feet 3.5 inches). However, "average" does not mean "healthy" — NHS guidance focuses on healthy weight ranges based on BMI rather than average weight alone.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Ranges by Height

Rather than following average weight, the NHS recommends using BMI (Body Mass Index) to determine a healthy weight for your height. A healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9 for most UK adults. Using our free BMI calculator above, you can check your personal BMI instantly.

  • 5 feet (152 cm): healthy weight range approximately 45–57 kg (7 stone 1 lb – 8 stone 13 lbs)
  • 5 feet 6 inches (168 cm): healthy weight range approximately 52–70 kg (8 stone 2 lbs – 11 stone 0 lbs)
  • 6 feet (183 cm): healthy weight range approximately 61–82 kg (9 stone 8 lbs – 12 stone 13 lbs)

These ranges apply to adults aged 18–65. For adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds because these groups face higher health risks at lower BMI levels.

Remember that healthy weight depends on many factors: muscle mass, bone density, age, genetics, and overall fitness. Someone may weigh above the average but still be healthy if they have high muscle mass. Conversely, weight within the average range doesn't assures good health. Your GP can provide personalised advice about whether your weight is healthy for your individual circumstances.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the average weight for a 5 foot 8 inch tall adult in the UK?

For an adult 5 feet 8 inches (173 cm) tall, a healthy BMI falls between approximately 55–74 kg (8 stone 10 lbs – 11 stone 9 lbs). The UK average for this height is around 68–70 kg, though this varies by sex and age. Use the BMI calculator on this page to find your personal healthy range.

Is average weight the same as healthy weight?

No. Average weight is what most people weigh; healthy weight is determined by BMI and individual health factors. Many UK adults are overweight by NHS standards, so average does not mean healthy. NHS guidance recommends using BMI calculators and consulting your GP rather than relying on average figures.

How do I convert my weight to stone if I know it in kilograms?

Divide your weight in kg by 6.35 to get stone. For example, 70 kg ÷ 6.35 = 11 stone (approximately). Use our free weight converter above to instantly convert between kg, stone, and pounds — it's faster and more precise.

Does muscle mass affect what a "healthy" weight should be?

Yes. BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes and very muscular individuals may have a high BMI but low body fat. Your GP can assess whether your weight is healthy by considering fitness level, waist circumference, and overall health, not BMI alone.

What's the difference between average weight and recommended weight loss target?

Average weight is descriptive — it shows what people actually weigh. A recommended weight loss target is prescriptive — based on your individual BMI, health conditions, and GP assessment. Our GLP-1 weight loss calculator can help estimate potential weight loss outcomes if relevant to your health goals.
