Average Height Per Weight in the UK
There's no single "correct" weight for a given height because body composition varies widely between individuals based on muscle mass, bone density, and frame size. However, the NHS provides healthy weight ranges for different heights, and we can look at average UK measurements to understand what's typical. Using our free BMI calculator and weight converter, you can check where your personal height and weight fall within these ranges and what they mean for your health.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
Average UK Adult Height and Weight
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the average UK adult man weighs approximately 85.7 kg (13 stone 7 lbs) and stands about 175.3 cm (5 feet 9 inches) tall. The average UK adult woman weighs approximately 71.6 kg (11 stone 3 lbs) and stands about 161.6 cm (5 feet 3.5 inches) tall.
These averages give a BMI of approximately 27.9 for men and 27.4 for women—both in the "overweight" category according to NHS guidance. This means the average UK adult exceeds the healthy weight threshold, though individual health depends on many factors beyond weight alone.
However, these are population averages. Healthy weight varies significantly by individual height, age, sex, ethnicity, and muscle mass. Our weight converter tool helps you translate your weight between kg, stone, and pounds, while the BMI calculator shows you exactly where your measurements fall in NHS health categories.

Healthy Weight Ranges for Different Heights
The NHS defines a healthy weight as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for most adults. This translates to different weight ranges depending on your height. For example, at 5 feet 8 inches (173 cm), a healthy weight falls between approximately 55 kg (8 stone 9 lbs) and 74 kg (11 stone 9 lbs).
For South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults, the NHS recommends lower thresholds—healthy weight starts at BMI 18.5 but extends only to 22.9 rather than 24.9, because these populations face higher health risks from excess weight at lower BMI levels.
Remember that BMI has limitations: it doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, doesn't account for where weight is stored, and may not be accurate during pregnancy or in elderly individuals. Your GP can provide personalised health advice about what weight range is right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
What is the average weight for a UK adult woman?
The average UK adult woman weighs approximately 71.6 kg (11 stone 3 lbs) and is about 161.6 cm (5 feet 3.5 inches) tall. However, this is a population average. Healthy weight varies significantly by individual height, muscle mass, and frame size. Use our BMI calculator to check your personal healthy weight range.
Is average weight the same as healthy weight?
No. Average UK weight (BMI ~27.4–27.9) falls in the overweight category according to NHS guidelines. Healthy weight is a BMI of 18.5–24.9 for most adults, and 18.5–22.9 for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults. Average doesn't mean healthy.
How do I find my healthy weight for my height?
Calculate your BMI using your height and weight—our free BMI calculator does this instantly. A healthy BMI is 18.5–24.9 for most adults (or 18.5–22.9 for certain ethnic groups). Your GP can also advise on what's healthy for your individual circumstances, including any health conditions.
Does muscle mass affect healthy weight for a given height?
Yes. BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes or very muscular individuals may have a high BMI but low body fat. Waist circumference is also important—for men, over 102 cm indicates increased health risk; for women, over 88 cm. Your GP can assess your individual health beyond BMI alone.
Why are healthy weight ranges different for some ethnic groups?
The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds (18.5–22.9 rather than 18.5–24.9) for South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean adults because research shows these populations face higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease at lower BMI levels. This reflects genetic and metabolic differences.
