Average Weight for Women in the UK

The average weight for adult women in the UK is approximately 71.6 kg (11 stone 3 lbs), according to the Office for National Statistics. However, average doesn't mean ideal or healthy — what matters is your personal healthy weight range, which depends on your height and body composition. The NHS uses BMI (body mass index) to define healthy weight for adults. For most women, a healthy weight corresponds to a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Your ideal body weight range varies significantly based on how tall you are, so comparing yourself to national averages isn't the best approach to health.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Range by Height for Women

The ideal weight calculator for women is based on BMI, not a single target number. Here's how it works: a healthy BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 translates to different weights depending on your height.

  • 5ft 2in (157cm): Healthy weight range is approximately 46–61 kg (7 stone 3 lbs to 9 stone 8 lbs)
  • 5ft 4in (163cm): Healthy weight range is approximately 49–66 kg (7 stone 10 lbs to 10 stone 5 lbs)
  • 5ft 6in (168cm): Healthy weight range is approximately 52–70 kg (8 stone 2 lbs to 11 stone 0 lbs)
  • 5ft 8in (173cm): Healthy weight range is approximately 55–74 kg (8 stone 8 lbs to 11 stone 8 lbs)
  • 5ft 10in (178cm): Healthy weight range is approximately 59–79 kg (9 stone 4 lbs to 12 stone 5 lbs)

These ranges are based on NHS BMI guidelines for the general population. For women of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends slightly lower thresholds — a healthy BMI may start at 18.5 and go up to 22.9 instead.

Understanding BMI and Your Healthy Weight

BMI is a useful screening tool, but it has important limitations. It doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat — so an athlete with high muscle mass might have a BMI in the "overweight" range despite being very fit. BMI also doesn't account for where fat is stored on your body; waist circumference matters too. The NHS recommends women keep their waist below 80 cm (31.5 inches) for good health, and below 88 cm (34.5 inches) for reduced risk.

Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal BMI instantly. Combined with the weight converter tool, you can easily see your healthy weight range in both kg and stone — whatever measurement you prefer. Your GP can also provide personalised advice about what a healthy weight means for your individual health profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's considered a healthy weight for women in the UK?

According to NHS guidelines, a healthy weight corresponds to a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9. This translates to different kilogram ranges depending on your height. For example, at 5ft 6in, a healthy weight is roughly 52–70 kg (8 stone 2 lbs to 11 stone 0 lbs). Your GP or our free BMI calculator can help you determine your personal healthy range.

Is the average UK female weight the same as a healthy weight?

No. The average UK woman weighs about 71.6 kg (11 stone 3 lbs), but this is an average across all heights and body types — not a health target. Healthy weight varies significantly by height and individual factors like muscle mass and bone density. Focus on your personal BMI and health rather than comparing yourself to national averages.

How do I calculate my ideal body weight?

The most evidence-based method is to calculate your BMI. A healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9 can be converted to a kg or stone range for your specific height. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal BMI and healthy weight range instantly. This is more accurate than general formulas.

Do ethnicity-adjusted BMI thresholds apply to all women?

Yes. Women of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage have higher health risks at lower BMI levels according to NHS guidance. For these groups, a healthy BMI starts at 18.5 and goes up to 22.9 rather than 24.9. If this applies to you, discuss appropriate thresholds with your GP.

What if I'm above the healthy weight range — what should I do?

If your BMI is above 25, speaking with your GP is a good first step. They can assess your overall health, discuss lifestyle changes, and advise whether further support might help. Sustainable weight loss of 0.5–1 kg per week is recommended. Our free progress tracker can help you log your weight journey if you decide to make changes.
