Average Weight For People — UK Data and Health Context

The average weight for UK adults varies by age, sex, and height, but current data shows that men weigh approximately 85.7 kg (13 stone 7 lbs) and women approximately 71.6 kg (11 stone 3 lbs) on average. However, average does not mean healthy — understanding your ideal body weight and healthy weight range for your height is more important for your health than knowing the average. The NHS uses BMI to define healthy weight ranges, which take your individual height into account. Use our free BMI calculator to find your personal healthy weight range and see how your weight affects your health.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Average UK Adult Weight — Current Data

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), current average weights for UK adults are:

  • Men: approximately 85.7 kg (13 stone 7 lbs) at an average height of 175.3 cm (5 ft 9 in), giving an average BMI of 27.9
  • Women: approximately 71.6 kg (11 stone 3 lbs) at an average height of 161.6 cm (5 ft 3.5 in), giving an average BMI of 27.4

Importantly, the average UK weight is in the overweight range according to NHS guidelines (BMI 25–29.9). This reflects current public health trends rather than a healthy benchmark. Your healthy weight range for height uk is what matters most — not how you compare to the average. The NHS healthy weight calculator uses your specific height to determine your personal healthy range, which typically spans from a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9. Use our weight converter to check your weight in both metric and imperial measurements.

Healthy Weight Range — What Matters More Than Average

Rather than comparing yourself to average weight, focus on your healthy weight range according to NHS guidance. Your ideal weight depends on your height, age, muscle mass, and frame size — not on what others weigh. For most adults, a healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9. If you are 5 ft 8 in (173 cm) tall, your healthy weight range is approximately 55–74 kg (8 st 10 lbs to 11 st 9 lbs). For those of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends lower thresholds because these groups face higher health risks at lower BMI levels. Even a 5–10% reduction from your current weight can bring meaningful health benefits, including lower blood pressure, improved blood sugar control, and reduced joint strain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the average weight for an adult in the UK?

According to ONS data, the average weight for UK men is approximately 85.7 kg (13 stone 7 lbs) and for women approximately 71.6 kg (11 stone 3 lbs). However, average is not the same as healthy — the NHS uses BMI to define healthy weight ranges based on individual height, which is a better health reference point.

Is the average weight healthy?

No. The average UK adult weight currently falls into the overweight BMI range (25–29.9). This reflects public health trends, not a healthy benchmark. A healthy BMI is 18.5–24.9 according to NHS guidelines. Your personal healthy weight depends on your height, not on how you compare to others.

What is my ideal weight for my height?

Your ideal body weight depends on your height, age, frame size, and muscle mass. Use our free BMI calculator to find your healthy weight range — enter your height and it will show the range of weights that fall into the healthy BMI category (18.5–24.9) specifically for you.

How do I find my healthy weight range?

The easiest way is to use our free healthy weight calculator on this page, which shows your BMI-based healthy range instantly. Alternatively, multiply your height in metres squared by 18.5 (lower bound) and 24.9 (upper bound). For example, at 1.70 m: lower = 18.5 × (1.70)² = 53.4 kg; upper = 24.9 × (1.70)² = 71.9 kg.

Does my healthy weight differ if I'm from a South Asian or Black African background?

Yes. The NHS recommends lower BMI thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean heritage because these groups have higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease at lower BMI levels. For these populations, a healthy BMI starts at 18.5–22.9 rather than 18.5–24.9. Discuss your personal healthy weight range with your GP if you fall into these groups. ```
