What Is My Average Weight For My Height And Age?
Your average weight depends on your height, age, body composition, and individual health factors — there's no single "correct" number that applies to everyone. However, the NHS uses BMI (Body Mass Index) to define healthy weight ranges based on height, regardless of age. A healthy BMI falls between 18.5 and 24.9, which translates to a specific weight range for your height. Use our free BMI calculator above to find your personal healthy weight range instantly, then compare it to NHS guidelines to understand where you stand.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).
While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.
The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.
Understanding Healthy Weight Range By Height
Healthy weight depends primarily on your height, not your age. The NHS defines a healthy BMI as 18.5–24.9 for all adults. To find your ideal body weight range, multiply your height in metres by itself, then multiply by 18.5 and 24.9. For example, at 1.70m tall, a healthy weight range is approximately 53.5kg to 72kg (8st 5lbs to 11st 4lbs).
Age does affect metabolism and muscle mass, which can influence weight naturally over time. However, the same BMI categories apply across all adult age groups. For UK adults of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, the NHS recommends slightly lower thresholds: a healthy BMI starts at 18.5 but extends only to 22.9, reflecting higher health risks at higher weights in these groups.
- 18.5–24.9 = healthy weight (all adults)
- 25.0–29.9 = overweight
- 30.0+ = obese
Average UK weight varies by height and sex. The average UK adult man weighs approximately 85.7kg (13st 7lbs) at 175cm tall, whilst the average woman weighs approximately 71.6kg (11st 3lbs) at 162cm. However, average does not mean healthy — the healthy weight range is the better guide for your personal health.

How To Calculate Your Personal Healthy Weight Range
Your healthy weight range for your height is determined by your BMI. Simply use our free healthy weight calculator on this page to enter your height — it will instantly show you the weight range that corresponds to a healthy BMI of 18.5–24.9. You can also convert your weight between kg, stone, and pounds using our weight converter to see your weight in whichever unit you prefer.
Remember that BMI has limitations: it does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or where fat is stored on your body. An athlete with significant muscle may have a high BMI but excellent health. Additionally, waist circumference matters — the NHS recommends men keep waist measurements under 94cm and women under 80cm for reduced health risk. Discuss your personal healthy weight target with your GP, especially if you have existing health conditions or are significantly outside the healthy range.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.
Does my age affect what my healthy weight should be?
No. The NHS uses the same BMI categories (18.5–24.9) for all adults regardless of age. However, age does affect metabolism and muscle mass naturally. You may need to work slightly harder to maintain a healthy weight as you age, but the target range itself doesn't change.
What's the difference between average weight and healthy weight?
Average weight is what most people in your demographic actually weigh — for UK adults, this is approximately 85.7kg for men and 71.6kg for women. Healthy weight is what the NHS recommends based on BMI science. Many UK adults are overweight, so average is higher than healthy.
Should I aim for the lower or upper end of the healthy weight range?
Either end of the healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) is healthy. Choose based on your personal preference, body composition, and how you feel. Your GP can advise if you have specific health goals. Sustainable, gradual changes are more effective than aiming for an extreme.
Are the healthy weight ranges different for men and women at the same height?
No. BMI categories are the same for men and women at the same height. However, men typically have more muscle mass, so two people of identical height and weight may have different body compositions — one healthier than the other. This is why BMI is a screening tool, not a perfect measure.
What if I'm significantly above or below my healthy weight range?
If you're outside the healthy range, chat with your GP. They can assess your individual health, consider your family history, and discuss safe options like dietary changes or, if relevant, structured weight management support. NHS tier 3 services can offer specialist guidance.
