Average Weight of a Man in the UK

The average weight of a UK adult man is approximately 85.7 kg (13 stone 7 lbs), according to the latest Office for National Statistics data. However, average weight varies significantly by height and doesn't necessarily reflect a healthy weight for an individual. A more useful approach is understanding your personal healthy weight range based on your height and BMI. Use our free BMI calculator to find out whether your weight falls within the healthy range for your height, rather than comparing yourself to national averages.

What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Healthy Weight Range for Men — Using BMI

A healthy weight range for men depends entirely on height. The NHS defines a healthy weight as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. For example, a man who is 5ft 10in (178 cm) tall has a healthy weight range of approximately 65–83 kg (10 stone 3 lbs to 13 stone). A man who is 5ft 8in (173 cm) tall should aim for a healthy weight range of 55–75 kg (8 stone 8 lbs to 11 stone 11 lbs). These ranges are significantly narrower than the average UK weight, which reflects why many UK men fall into the overweight category (BMI 25–29.9) or obese category (BMI 30+). The NHS recommends using these BMI-based healthy weight ranges as your target, not national averages. Our free weight converter can help you switch between kilograms, stone, and pounds to find your ideal weight range in the units you prefer.

How Your Weight Compares — BMI vs Average

Being at the national average weight doesn't mean your weight is healthy for your height. Many UK men weigh more than recommended because the average includes people across a wide range of heights and body types. Instead of comparing yourself to the national average, calculate your personal healthy weight range using the BMI formula: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². If your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, your weight is in the healthy range for your height. If it's 25 or above, you may benefit from gradual weight loss alongside increased physical activity and dietary changes. Your GP can provide personalised advice about what a healthy weight means for your individual health.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What is the average weight of a UK man?

The average weight of a UK adult man is approximately 85.7 kg (13 stone 7 lbs). However, this average includes men of all heights and body types, so it may not reflect a healthy weight for you personally. Your healthy weight depends on your height and should aim for a BMI of 18.5–24.9 according to NHS guidelines.

What's a healthy weight range for a man of my height?

Healthy weight ranges vary by height. Use the BMI formula: weight (kg) ÷ height (m)² — a result between 18.5 and 24.9 is healthy. For example, a 5ft 10in man should weigh 65–83 kg; a 5ft 8in man should weigh 55–75 kg. Our free BMI calculator on this page will calculate your personal healthy range instantly.

Is the average UK weight the same as a healthy weight?

No. The average UK male weight (85.7 kg) is considerably higher than the healthy weight range for most men, because averages include people of all heights and those who are overweight or obese. Focus on your personal BMI and healthy weight range rather than the national average.

How can I find my ideal weight?

Calculate your BMI using your height and current weight. If it falls between 18.5 and 24.9, your weight is healthy. If higher, aim to lose weight gradually (0.5–1 kg per week) through a calorie deficit and increased physical activity. Use our BMI calculator and progress tracker to monitor your journey.

Why do UK men weigh more on average than recommended?

Overweight and obesity rates have risen across the UK due to factors including less active lifestyles, increased calorie intake, and medical conditions. Approximately 73% of UK men are overweight or obese (BMI 25+). This is why relying on average weight is misleading — focus on your personal healthy weight range instead.
