Average Weight for UK Males — By Height and Health

The average weight for UK adult men is approximately 85.7 kg (13 stone 7 lbs), according to recent ONS data. However, this national average doesn't tell you whether *your* weight is healthy for *your* height. This guide explains what "average" means, shows healthy weight ranges by height, and helps you understand where you stand. What Is BMI and Why Does It Matter?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is the most widely used screening tool for assessing whether your weight falls within a healthy range. Used by the NHS, GPs, and weight management services across the UK, BMI provides a quick snapshot of your weight relative to your height. The formula is simple: your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m²).

While BMI isn't a perfect measure — it doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution — it remains the standard first step in identifying potential weight-related health risks including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and certain cancers.

Below 18.5Underweight
18.5 – 24.9Healthy
25 – 29.9Overweight
30+Obese

The NHS also recommends adjusted thresholds for people of South Asian, Chinese, or Black African heritage — a BMI of 23 or above is classified as overweight, and 27.5 as obese. Our calculator includes this adjustment as a one-click toggle.

Average UK Male Weight and Healthy Weight Ranges by Height

Average UK adult male weight: 85.7 kg (13st 7lbs)

Average UK adult male height: 175.3 cm (5ft 9in)

Average UK adult male BMI: 27.9 (overweight category)

This means the average UK man currently falls into the overweight category according to NHS guidelines. However, "average" does not mean "healthy" — the average BMI reflects rising obesity levels, not an ideal target.

Healthy weight range for a man of 5ft 9in (175cm): 59–79 kg (9st 4lbs to 12st 6lbs). Your ideal body weight within this range depends on muscle mass and frame size, which vary between individuals. Convert your own weight using our free weight converter to see where you fall against this healthy weight range.

  • BMI under 25 = healthy weight range
  • BMI 25–29.9 = overweight (increased health risk)
  • BMI 30+ = obese (significant health concerns)

Factors Affecting Ideal Weight for Men

Your ideal weight isn't simply a number — it depends on several factors that the BMI alone cannot capture. Muscle mass is the biggest variable: muscle is denser than fat, so a man who trains regularly may have a higher weight but lower body fat percentage and better health than someone lighter with less muscle. Frame size matters too — a naturally large-framed man will have a higher healthy weight than a small-framed man of the same height.

Age and ethnicity also influence healthy weight ranges. Muscle naturally declines with age, so weight distribution changes over time. For men of South Asian, Chinese, Black African, or Black Caribbean heritage, NHS guidance recommends assessing health risk at slightly lower BMI thresholds, as these populations face higher cardiovascular risk at the same BMI level.

Use our healthy weight calculator to get a personalised range for your height, then speak to your GP for individual guidance.

How We Built These Tools

Every calculator and guide on myweightcheck is built with accuracy and transparency in mind. Our BMI calculator uses the standard WHO formula with NHS-aligned category thresholds. Our GLP-1 projections are modelled on published clinical trial data from SURMOUNT and STEP studies.

All data stays on your device. We don't require sign-ups, and we don't store your health information on any server. Your progress tracker saves data locally in your browser using localStorage, so only you can see it.

We're based in the UK and our tools are designed specifically for UK users — supporting stone & lbs by default, referencing NHS guidelines, using NICE-approved medication data, and linking to GPhC-registered pharmacies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about BMI, weight loss medications, and our free UK tools.

What's considered a healthy weight for a UK man?

According to NHS guidelines, a healthy BMI is 18.5 to 24.9. For an average-height man (5ft 9in), this equates to roughly 59–79 kg (9st 4lbs to 12st 6lbs). However, healthy weight also depends on muscle mass and frame size. Use the BMI calculator on this page to find your personal healthy range.

Is the average UK male weight of 13st 7lbs healthy?

No — the average weight of 85.7 kg puts the typical UK man into the overweight category (BMI 25–29.9). Average does not mean healthy. The rising average reflects obesity trends, not ideal health targets. Your GP can assess whether your individual weight is healthy for you.

How does height affect ideal weight for men?

Height is the primary factor. A taller man requires proportionally more weight to maintain healthy BMI. For example, a man of 6ft needs roughly 8–10 kg more weight than a 5ft 9in man to stay within the healthy BMI range. Use our weight converter to check your weight against your specific height.

Does muscle mass affect what I should weigh?

Yes — significantly. Muscle is denser than fat, so a muscular man may weigh more but have lower body fat and better health than someone lighter with less muscle. BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, which is why your GP's overall assessment is important alongside BMI.

Why do South Asian men have different healthy weight thresholds?

NHS guidance recognises that South Asian, Chinese, Black African, and Black Caribbean populations face higher cardiovascular risk at lower BMI levels due to genetic and metabolic factors. Healthcare professionals may recommend aiming for a BMI under 23 instead of 25 for these groups. Discuss your personal targets with your GP.
